It was Bradley, who was the Army Group commander that made the decision. It was later reported that the Air Force had dropped timed bombs in the area and there was a fear that our troops might have run over them. However, Bradley explained that he feared a head on meeting with the Canadians might cause FF casualties. Both are good reasons, but I suspect that caution reigned in Bradley's mind. BTW, 12th AG had been activated with Bradley in command, he was no longer under the command of Monty. Once 12AG was activated, he was equal to Monty.
