    Default Opera

I went to the opera on Tuesday night to see Puccini's La Boheme. They had a great thirty minute lecture prior to the opera and english translation above, during the whole opera. It was wonderful and they are absolutely correct. Seeing a live performance of an opera is far better than watching on DVD or TV. La Boheme is probably the most perfectly written opera ever produced.

I strongly urge any of you, if you have had any desire; go and spend the money to see a live opera. Start with La Boheme or the Bohemian's. It is set in the Latin quarter of Paris in the 19th century.

You don't have to be a knowledgeable person about the operas, just use the internet to hear some of the famous arias on Youtube or read about the opera, its history, and the story. One good source is the UCTV which is the UCSD TV station that has a program called Operatalk with Dr. Nick Revelas. Dr. Revelas is the person who gave the live lecture before the opera. You can download the videos to realplayer and save them.

My wife and I are planning to hear La Traviata in April, possibly on a Sunday matinee. Less crowded downtown.

    Enjoy

    Dennis:

My parents would play La Boheme when I was a kid so I was familar with both the music and the story. Interesting how it was the inspiration for the Broadway musical 'Rent'. My nephew got a chance to perform Rent while in high school and was quite good.

I am in a similar position. I used to go to my uncle's practice with the symphony and our light opera. I also went to his recitals, so I am very familiar with most of the music. The stories I have to research a little. Plus, having played an instrument well into college, gives me an edge. Knowing a little italian and spanish also. However, it was a great experience.

I have even gone and bought some new white long sleeve dress shirts and a colored dress shirt to look coooool! It enjoy getting dressed up and attending these functions. In fact, I don't even go to air shows anymore, I do want to go to Ontario air museum and Pearl Harbor, but airplanes in flight are old for me now. I guess that is a sign of age.

I would say more a sign of expanded horizons. Just don't wear a dress shirt to the air museum!

I want one that says "Face it boys, I'm older and have more insurance" or "Old and sneaky beats young and strong every time".

Ha Ha, I used to tell my kids the same adage. "Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill, every time." But I like the first one.

I can't take credit for either. Don't know where the second one comes from, but the first one is a paraphrase of a line from the film "Fried Green Tomatos". Very good movie.
