I've just bought Thunder At Sea and stick with it for about a month.I have some few question, can anyone answer my question,Please?
1.Is there anyway to extend 'Odyssy' Campaign to the end of the year or some further month in 1942.
2.Why there is 2 'Nagara' CL ships(name not class) in ABDA campaign,if it's a mistake, can i remove her or change her name.
3.There is the Nagara Class CL,that called Yura but in Fighting Steel/FSP it's called Yuru. Can I correct her name without crashing the game.

Hello,
I believe that as long as the ship name (that you wish to change to) exists in the FSP database you can change to that name in the TAS scenario, yes.
The starting and end dates are located in the "CampaignInfo.cfg" file in the scenario folder. However it may/will cause game play issues if you extend the scenario much longer, you would have to try different values to find out if any serious issues develop.
Always remember to back up your game files before modifying them of course.
Thanks.

There are a couple of ways you can do this depending on what best suits what you want.
In TAS you need to update the AxisCampaignShips file and the *.scn file to reflect the correct name that is reflected in the FSP database. You can also change the shortname in the *.scn file if you do not want to be confused with a different name showing for this ship while you are in FSP as the screen display shows whatever the short name is for the ship. In this way you will not have to worry about FSP crashing or TAS not being able to find the ship when you go back to TAS after completing the FSP A Tas Scenario battle.
If you want to modify the A Tas Scenario file you have to do this before opening FSP automatically from TAS, as otherwise FSP will crash when you try to load the A Tas Scenario as it does not recognize the ship name. After the battle is resolved you must also change the name in the end of engagement file back to the name in TAS, otherwise when you load the battle results back into TAS, it will not be able to find the ship as the name in the end of engagement file does not match the name in TAS.
If for some reason you wanted to have additional fictional ships for a particular class (for example more Yamato class, Montana class, H Class etc), then it takes a bit more effort but you can do this. If you want to do this let me know and I will explain what you need to do.

First of all, Thank you very very much,Richard. You guys are just like Merlin wizard to me.
Making my dreams come true. So,I have some more questions. Here it is.
1.Why the additional class ship's 2D/3D picture in FSP doesn't have detail on it's surface (just like an unpainted ship model) ,can anyone do anything about it?.
2.Since i'm Thai and we're so proud of our coastal defence ship Dhonburi class, can i add more new different class, can i create my own 3D Dhonburi class?
3.Adding ship to existing class is interesting, please tell me how? it looks like Italian fleet missing CA Bolzano or some other CL ship?
4.Something strange about King George V Class,it's very formidable to a torpedo?I used to hit her with 7 German torpedoes in an hour fight and she's still floating??? In screen after the battle, her floating point dropping about a half???Oh my.Have you experience this?
Thank you for answering.

Hello again,
Unfortunately it is not possible for players to add new ships to FS/FSP. That requires a proprietary tool (and file format) that we did not have permission to share when we worked on the project.
The FSP-added models could have only simple textures included because of issues with the converter tools and newer versions of the modeling software used, a limitation of working on an older game.

Hi
Regarding your questions please see my comments below:
1.Why the additional class ship's 2D/3D picture in FSP doesn't have detail on it's surface (just like an unpainted ship model) ,can anyone do anything about it?
No as explained by William
2.Since i'm Thai and we're so proud of our coastal defence ship Dhonburi class, can i add more new different class, can i create my own 3D Dhonburi class?
No, as explained by William we cannot add any new classes of ships to FSP or modify the existing classes either
3.Adding ship to existing class is interesting, please tell me how? it looks like Italian fleet missing CA Bolzano or some other CL ship?
If you want to add any extra ships to any particluar class for use in TAS and FSP then you need to do the following:
In TAS you need to add the name of the new ship to Axis or Allied CampaignShips file. So if you wanted to add a new Yamato class say Shinano (which was actually converted to a CV) then you need to add BB Shinano to the AxisCampaignShips file
You also need to add BB Shinano to the .scn file, so you need to copy the full data for a "real" Yamato class and then change the name and shortname to Shinano
If you now allocate Shinano to a task force which runs into the enemy then when the A Tas Scenario is created you need to manually edit it before launching FSP. In the A Tas Scenario file change the name to that of a real Yamato i.e. change the name of Shinano to Yamato or Musashi but leave the short name as Shinano. After completing the FSP battle you will then need to also edit the end of engagement file by changing the name of the ship back to Shinano. So for example if you had in one division Yamato, Musashi and Shinano then your end of engagement file will show your ships as Yamato, Musashi and Yamato and you need to change the name of the third ship back to Shinano before loading the results of the battle back into TAS. (If you have any problems with this let me know where you get stuck and I will help you further).
4.Something strange about King George V Class,it's very formidable to a torpedo?I used to hit her with 7 German torpedoes in an hour fight and she's still floating??? In screen after the battle, her floating point dropping about a half???Oh my.Have you experience this?
There are a number of reasons for this including high KM dud ratios, low KM torpedo explosive charges compared to say the IJN Long Lance and don't forget the KGV class was actually one of the heaviest side armoured BB's of WW2. it just lacked a bit of punching power because of the 14" guns, which arguably in North Atlantic weather was not that much of a disadvantage as you had more chances of a hit with a 10 shell broadside and at close range a 14' shell would still be likely to do considerable damage (ask the Scharnhorst!)

Hello, I've got new question for you guys.
When i open the TAS game, there is a dialog says something like "Cannot find 'Z' table, time zone may be not reliable' and i've noticed that in Pacific Campaign like ABDA or Guadalcanal, the time is wrong about 7-12 hours. But in Fighting Steel battle,It's correct .
Since i used Win XP and my regional time is Bangkok,Hanoi,Jakarta TimeZone+7,So what is the problem about displaying correct time in TAS game.

Hello,
It sounds like you may have a bad install or corrupted game files -- I suggest that you backup any saved games you might have, uninstall TAS and FS/FSP (and delete all folders that exist related to those games), re-install everything and see if the issue repeats itself. If the issue still occurs, let me know in this thread and we will look at other potential causes. I really doubt your system local-time adjustment would be affecting the gametime clock, but I would not 100% rule it out given what I know of Windows
Thanks.

Oh,my game files are definitely not corrupted.I've try to uninstall and reinstall for more than 3-4 time.Actually it happened since my first installation of TAS Demo 2 years ago!! and it happens everytime i launch the game no matter full ver.or demo. But everything goes fine except displaying time in Pacific theatre.

Hello,
Hum, in that case it may indeed be a localization issue. What language set is your operating system running in?
watcharayui

Maybe localization. In Regional and Language option,I've set Standards and Format,Location and Language to be 'Thai/Thailand'.Your settings are all 'English(US)/US' right?.I will try that when i get back home.
Thanks,

Yui,
I would be interested to see what effect, if any, that has, yes.
Thanks!

A very busy week for me.It exactly says 'Could not find time zone information.Z-time conversions might be unreliable.'. After I change timezone in windows to some European time such as GMT Greenich, it disappeared. It's ok.
In Odyssey Campaign,I found out that after extending ending date to Dec.31,1942 in CampaignInfo file, the British fighting ship disappeared since Jan 1,1942 (I played Regina Marina). They sometime sent Transports without any escort to Malta, for 1 full year???!!!.How can I edit any files to send TF to fight me normally.I try to extend the Lastdate in AlliedMission file but it didn't work. Please teach me.
Thanks,
Yui

Hi
You need to change the End Date in the CampaignInfo file and you also need to change the end date for each mission that you wish to continue in the Allied Mission file. You will see that some task forces are covering convoys (Look for MISSION=Cover and COVEREDFORCE=?? where ?? is the convoy that is being covered by this Task Force). If you want an increased possibility of other forces, for example an increased possibility of an enemy intercept or bombardment mission, then you need to also increase the probability of the mission (Look for PROB=??).

Of course, I change ending date in Campaign file to 31121942.
The problem is, although I change the ending date in every tast force (except from or to greece) to be 31121942 in Allied mission file, there's still no British fighting ship to oppose me from jan 1942 onwards. They just sometimes send a convoy without escort for me to sink,it's very boring. Looks like there is a task force but no fighting ships in it, So TF disappears when start playing.
Please help me, you guys I just want to play Regina Marina to the end of 1942
Thanks,
Yui

Just a quick check, have you entered the dates as yearmonthday or daymonth year? TAS needs them to be input in the yearmonthday format so you need to enter them as 19421231 and not 31121942

I don't know what your success has been like in the first year of the campaign but looking at the Allied Campaign Ships file I see that the Allied forces are demobilising two BB's and 1 CV through the course of the first year. If you are inflicting damage or sinking Allied capital ships then this may explain what is happening. I suggest that you consider removing the withdrawal of these ships shown as:
BB Ramillies -
CA Kent -
CV Illustrious -
BB Royal Sovereign -
under various dates in this file.
If you have not been inflicting much damage then another possibility is that the missions are not occurring because their likelihood is too low and you should consider increasing the PROB=xx for the missions that you would like to oppose in the Allied Missions file.
Let me know how this goes

Some excellent suggestions from Richard (thank you for taking the time to post your thoughtful suggestions BTW).
When you extend a campaign it will often need some modifications of ship entry and exit dates as well as changes in the 'PROB=' rates for certain mission types. In general TAS was really designed for operational campaigns of no more than a few months: extending a campaign to much longer periods may require significant changes, and still may not perform quite as good the 'standard' length campaigns as you may exceed the design parameters of the TAS campaign generator.

Thanks William
I am still having great fun playing TAS and FS. I have significantly modified (extended and expanded) the Clash of Empires and RRR campaigns to the point that I am using every single ship larger than a DD available in FS as well as some fictional extras of some of the classes, all coming in as a few reinforcements per turn throughout the campaign.

I've tried to keep my ships in port without changing any probability value to avoid surface battle until late 1941, it appears in 1942 that there are RN warships coming out as it should be,Yeah. So,it's obvious that I may have inflicted too much damage to RN capital ship and with low prob.,they will not come out in 1942.
1.How exactly prob. value connects with the capital ship? Is 99 Maximum and 0 Minimum?
2.If I want to add more (existing) ships to RN in Odyssey campaign, I have to add them in MedShip file and AlliedCampaign file right? There are so much parameters in the MedShip file. How can I fill those parameters for each ship, especially 'Zposition',what is it?
3.Can you guys explain the necessery things to edit the campaign please.
Thanks You guys,
Yui

Hi
My comments for you are after each of your questions:
1.How exactly prob. value connects with the capital ship? Is 99 Maximum and 0 Minimum? - The probability is for each mission and the AI will select the appropriate ships out of those available at that point in time. 0 is 0% probability of that mission occurring at that point in time and 99 is 99% probability. In order to confront more capital ships you could increase the probability of the intercept and cover missions.
2.If I want to add more (existing) ships to RN in Odyssey campaign, I have to add them in MedShip file and AlliedCampaign file right? There are so much parameters in the MedShip file. How can I fill those parameters for each ship, especially 'Zposition',what is it? - Yes, you need to add the ships to both the MedShips.scn file (this is where you capture the FS data for each ship) and the AlliedCampaignShips.cfg file which is where you let TAS know what ships are available (apart from them being seriously damaged in a previous round) at what point in time. So in the AlliedCampaignShips file you add in the extra ships that you want to add to the campaign either at the beginning or as reinforcements at any particular date and then you add their FS data to the MedShips.scn file. I find that the easiest way to add the FS data is either to look for these ships in the .scn files of other campaigns and copy their entire data set across or I create a fictional FS scenario using FS Scenario Editor by modifying an existing FS scenario and saving it under a new name (which I call A Data Gatherer so I know where to go copy the information from). I then add the new ships in FS Scenario Editor, save the scenario once I have all the ships I need and then exit FS Scenario Editor, open the A Data Gatherer file and again copy all the data for the ships that I want into the MedShips.scn file. The position is not important in that TAS will load in the actual positions when it creates the A Tas scenario file for the battle, but you do need to have a position entered. otherwise this will cause errors. This can be copied from any of the other ships in the MedShips.scn file, it does not matter if it is duplicated at this point as TAS will replace it with the battle position as described before.
3.Can you guys explain the necessery things to edit the campaign please. - I think I have done this by answering your first two questions above, if you need any more help just post a reply and I will see how I can help you further.
Good luck!

Hi
Something else I have only just thought of that may explain what you have been seeing is that the Allied Forces may not have enough operational points, but before we change that, please try out the changes in my last post prior to this one.

Hi Richard, all,
I know that it is more than a year old topic, but I'd like to ask you if it it possible to try your "extended and expanded" Clash of Empires and RRR campaigns, especially RRR as a KM. That is in a way what i was always trying to find since Michel Emmerichs FSNA.
thank you,

Hi richmi
I don't mind at all but I would suggest that you get in touch with me so that we can have a telephonic discussion about this.
Firstly you must be made aware that the campaign I have put together is not a NWS vetted campaign.
Secondly it is an evolving campaign, basically I am trying to simulate various parts of World War 2 with appropriate mission types for certain date ranges in certain world spheres. I am still working through and modifying the campaign as I play it through these date ranges.
Thirdly the TAS AI was not designed to be able to handle this level of a campaign entirely automatically, and it therefore requires considerable manual intervention at the end of each period (i.e. fortnight). Basically I save the campaign as it stands at the end of the period and then go in first as the side I am playing and assign the ships available to the various task forces/missions as required and then also have to do this for the other side, and only once I have done this for both sides can you then run TAS for that period.
Fourthly (and by no means finally, I am just pointing out the major points here), there is also quite a bit of manual intervention required to get the A TAS scenario file to run without crashing in FSP and then to correct the end of engagement file before loading the battle resolution information back into TAS (this still happens automatically, but you have to manually edit the end of engagement file to match the uncorrected A TAS scenario file so that the correct ships are impacted in TAS).
Whereabouts in the world are you located?
I am not sure what the forum rules on this are but my home e-mail address is richard.mortimer@att.net and I am in Houston, Texas at the moment.
Send me an e-mail and let's see how we can get in touch.
Another option would be for me to discuss this all with someone like William Miller, see if they would be prepared to vet this, put some supporting docs together, let them vet this and then after modification if required, make it available with the supporting information for a wider audience.

Hi Richard
Did you decide whether or not to progress your adaptation of RRR? I would be happy to try to help you with it although I have not done much with TAS campaigns since I developed Clash of Empires.

Hi Everyone
Yeah I'm glad to see that everyone's still enjoying this game. I abandoned this game for about a year, but hey i'm going to play it again and finish editing "Odyssey" campaign. I've extended it to the end of 1942 and the real problem that RN warships didn't come out in 1942 is, exactly like Richard said, they don't have enough operational points.Yeah, i've added more points and they come out just fine in 1942. I also checked RN ships operating in Mediteranean and find out that there're actually so many more RN warships in Med sea than in our game.Of course more RN CVs for Italians to be frightened. So, I decided to add them all.
I'll tell you the result.
Thanks
Yui
