when I am creating my ships on the first turn, I get a message in sufficient dock space (or words to effect), and can't build anymore ships. Can't remember reading anything about ship building limitations. How do I fix this?

Let me suggest something obvious until somebody else comes along: with so many ships already in the pipeline on turn one (and I think this is true of every country), your ability to start new ones is extremely limited. So the "fix" would be to wait until a few of the existing construction projects are finished.

Ron,

There might be a couple of reasons for this....

You might be out of RPs. The available tonnage left to you should be listed at the bottom of the Build Ships screen.

Or, you might not have sufficient infrastructure to build ships that large. However, that shoudn't happen on the first turn.

My bet is you've run out of RPs.

Obviously it makes much sense to have a limited capacity: shipyards are limited facilities -- and complex and expensive to build too.
But I don't remember reading in the manual how are these limits set and what can the player do to increase his shipbuilding capability (invest in infrastructure, I suppose: but what infrastructure?).

Thx

HB,

I don't have the game in front of me right now, but in the Build Infrastructure screen toward the lower right corner you have the various infrastructure settings for a given port. The one labeled "Docks" or "Dockyards" (can't remember!) drives the building and repair capability for that port. Where airfields have to be a certain level to operate larger aircraft, you docks have to be a certain size to effect repairs and build ships of larger size.

Investing in a port's dock infrastructure will allow you to build/repair larger ships at that port. If you enable pop-ups on the Theater Map, they should show you that capabilities of your ports.

And, don't forget, that bombardments will damage your infrastructure. If one of your ports gets hammered, make sure you look at it after the turn to determine just how bad the damage was. During playtesting, I couldn't figure out why Malta never launched any defensive fighters even though I had plenty available. Turns out my airfields had been bombed to level 0....

All - there are two limits in the game on shipbuilding:
1. The number of RPs available
2. The shipyard capacity at your ports that can build ships.

Let me give an example. You may have easily enough RPs to build BBs. But if none of your ports are at docks levels able to build BBs, you won't be able to. You'll have to build ships that your docks can build, or wait and invest in docks infrastructure.

The level of dockyard infrastructure at each port is set when a campaign is created, but during a game can be degraded through enemy attack and/or increased through infrastructure expenditure.

But there is no limit to the number of ships you can build in a port, beyond available RP? There is nothing to stop me from building 1,000 DDs each month if I have the RP for that (and the time to spare to order them)?

That's right - if you have the RPs, and that port can build DDs.

I don't model dockyard constraints in terms of numbers of docks etc; I use a simplified model.
