Ok, received today, installed and tried, well the admiral screen is strange. I can see the board, the map, the admiral pic and the ship pic, nothing more, no desk, no radio or books...
Also when I try to enter the map it looks, well garbled, strange, nothing is correctly displayed, only the blue see and the bases, no land or weather... nothing
Any idea?

Try uninstalling the game and then install again. You won't need to install java again so just click don't install when you are asked again.

I read previously that its a good idea to put Java in first, then instal the game

Stratos - if you have a 64 bit operating system you will need a different java run-time. There is a help thread on this.

Stratos - to be safe you need to run it from your desktop icon, but this needs to to be the icon put there by the installer, not one you have made.
Can you please right click on your desktop icon, click on Properties' at the bottom of the menu, then, from the dialog that appears copy and paste the whole line in the field that says 'Target:' and copy that line into your response here?
Many thanks

C:\NWS\SAS-WW2\SASWW2.jar
Ahaa!
Rigth click on the SAS WW2 icon on your desktop, click on 'Properties' on the menu that appears, and in the popup dialog:
1. try copying this into the Target: field:
java.exe -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -jar SASWW2.jar
2. and make sure the Start In field has this:
C:\NWS\SAS-WW2
These parameters should have been created properly if you had installed SAS WW2 after having first installed the java run time.

Game don't start now
Stratos - we'll need to back to the beginning again I think.
Can you please do this:
1. Run the SAS W2 uninstaller - you can get to this from the All Programs -> SAS-WW2 -> Uninstall
2. Re-install the java run-time by doing this:
a. Find out whether you are running a 32 bit or a 64 bit windows OS - You can find out by clicking on Start -> Control Panel -> System. The info on the front page of the dialog shold tell you.
a. If you have a 32 bit windows operating system:
- go here to download the run-time file, and then run the installer
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
b. Otherwise, if you have a 64 bit Windows OS (such as Vista 64) go here to download the run-time:
https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u11-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer
Select 'Windows x64' as the platform. Then run the installer
3. After the java run-time is all installed insert your game CD, If the SAS WW2 installer does not start automatically, double click on the file 'SASWW2_Install.exe' on the CD
4. MOST IMPORTANT: At the end of the SAS WW2 installation, the installer will try to run the installer on the CD for the java run-time. Make sure you cancel out of this by clicking on the decline button, when the dialog appears asking you to accept or decline the java licence agreement. Then, click on the cancel button that should appear straight afterwards.
Phew:
You will know you have been successful if you see the SAS WW2 icon on your desktop.
Please do NOT change any memory settings on the desktop icon command string.
Firts, please confirm that the above process has worked.

Have you tried to set -Xmx1024m to a lower number? On my pc the number must be smaller than 950 else the game won´t start although i have 2 GB of ram.

Great news Stratos! And thanks guys for chipping in with the suggestion. I don't frankly understand why the 1024 value is a problem on a machine with 2 Gbs of RAM. Stratos - were you running any other apps when you tried to run SAS? Just curious.

Ok, started, intro and med scenario.
Med scenario is too complicated, lots of action even in the first turn, so I created one scenario myself. France Vs Italy early in the war, played the first battles and is very cool, just one suggestion, is possible to see the ship class during replay battle please?

Stratos - this can be done I think, it just depends on whether there is room on the UI; it has been a big job to try to present the critical info without interfering with your view. I'll wait to see what other requests come in re this. (There has been one already asking for ship speed to be shown). Then we'll decide what's doable. Your request is noted.

The best I could do is 1024 and 1408. Anything over 1408, the game would not open. These settings vs. the default resulted in approx. double the free memory during the run calc (400+ to 850+).

Tonedog & Oldspec4,
I have ran tests on SAS to determine how memory settings affect game (mainly turn calculation) speeds and below are my findings and suggestions:
Maximum Memory Allocations:
The maximum you can set the memory allocation to appears to be -Xms 1024m -Xmx 1496m if you have 3Gb or more RAM installed, at least on 32-bit operating systems. With 2Gb of memory it appears the maximum settings are exactly what you reported, -Xms 1024m -Xmx 1408m. With only 1 Gb of system RAM I would recommend leaving the memory settings at the default set when the game is installed. These maximum memory ranges appear to be set by JAVA and cannot be changed by us.
You should see a good improvement in turn calculation speed if you set the SAS shortcut to use to the above settings if you have a reasonably "lean" system, i.e. a system that does not have a large number of TSRs, which are programs/system files running in the background. If you have a large number of background services/programs running you may either see a) a limited increase in performance, b) the game may not startup since insufficient memory is available, or c) the system may start swapping large amounts of system RAM contents out to the swap drive and thus you see no speed increase or even experience a small slowdown.
Also, make sure your hard-drive is defragmented -- that can slow any game down, including SAS. No matter what your memory settings are the OS will swap some active memory out to the hard drive (not to mention that SAS itself will write a decent amount of data to the drive) and defragmenting the drive will help.
