This thread is for common questions and answers regarding the Supremacy at Sea series. Updated 1/6/09
Q: The installer does not show any (or incorrect) shortcuts for SAS-WW2?
This was a slight error on our part as during testing all of our beta testers already had Java, the language SAS is written in, installed. The best way to install SAS-WW2 is to install the Java JRE installer before installing the game. This is presently being corrected for our next production batch.
To install the lastest Java free downloadable runtime either use the link below or install it using the JRE file on the CD;
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Q: Where is my serial code?
All serial codes are emailed with the shipping notifications. Please make sure your anti-spam client is not set for a "kill all and ask questions later" setting as often our email notifications are intercepted. If you did not recieve your email for whatever reason contact us at nws-online@nws-online.net to have it resent.
Q: Copyright protection?
Our copyright protection is a serial code that will be shipped with each game as we have done with all of our other publications. The primary arrangement for the EULA is simple, you pay to play the game and you can install SAS for your own personal use on up to 2 systems - this allows gamers to install one copy of the game on a laptop and one on a desktop for home and travel access.
Q: Do you plan on future upgrades to the SAS engine?
Absolutely. Future upgrades are already in the planning stages and will be based on our own internal objectives and customer constructive feedback. Future upgrades will include engine improvements, extended gameplay options, added content, etc.
Q: What ships with the game?
A full color covered DVD case, a CD, and PDF documentation. SAS also includes full online help for all interface dialogs.
Q: More information about the game?
Go here; http://forums.navalwarfare.org/showthread.php?t=4 - several downloadable PDF packs are available including players manual, tutorial, media pack, and command structure pack. A long detailed description of what SAS will include is also listed there.
Q: Is a digital download option available?
SAS productions will only be available via direct physical shipment.
Q: Is there a playable demo?
Sorry but no. This is one of the reasons for all of the downloadable PDF files that describe and illustrate how the game works. Due to the code structure and design of the engine distributing a playable demo is not feasible.
Q: Are the campaigns dynamic or scripted?
Not only are the campaigns fully dynamic but they are also completely customizeable before you begin. There are settings for resources, opponents, starting forces, time frames, historical vs customized warship designs, etc. The SAS engine is a naval campaign simulator and construction kit all in one.
Q: Are there plans to expand on the land operations module of the SAS engine?
Before SAS-WW2 was released the land operations module of the engine was already started to be expanded on, including major work on amphibious operations. There are priority plans for expanding further with the land operations module as part of our future engine upgrades.
Q: Will you, or allow others to, compare the SAS engine to other possible competing designs?
At NWS we feel that each engine should be judged on its own merits and SAS has its own specific design objectives. NWS Team members will not engage in any direct comparisons out of professional, ethical, and mutual respect for other game publishers. We will only attempt to clarify what the SAS engine has to offer. We also ask that players observe and abide by our forum policies of professional conduct on our forums. Please note, we will not tolerate any sort unprofessional comments or "flame wars" with players trying to compare any possible competing designs. Every player has a right to decide for themselves or have constructive opinions about what they prefer to play or spend their money on.

Q: Will SAS-WW2 run on Vista/XP 64?
Yes, however you will need a different java run-time. You can download this from: Java Run-time Downloads (https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u11-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer). Select 'Windows x64' as the platform. After you install the run-time start the installer for SAS WW2. When the Java installer is prompted you cancel out of that dialog to avoid installing the 32bit run-time.
Q: How can I optimize/increase the speed of turn calculations in the game?
You can usually gain an increase in speed by setting the amount of memory that SAS is allowed to use to a larger value. To do this right-click on the SAS shortcut that was created on your computers desktop, then click "Properties" from the menu. You will see a item that is labeled "Target" with a text line reading something like "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\java.exe" -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -jar SASWW2.jar. If you have less than 2Gb of system RAM we recommend leaving the memory values (the -Xms512m and -Xmx1024m) as they are. If you have 2Gb of RAM you can try to increase the values to -Xms1024m -Xmx1408m, if you have 3GB or more of RAM you can try to increase the values to -Xms1024m -Xmx1496m . If you try this and the game does not start then decrease each value until the game does start, or set it back to the original values. Do not change any of the other values as your game will not start. Also, make sure your hard-drive is defragmented -- a badly fragmented hard-drive can slow down any game, including SAS.
Q: Can I print out the Briefing Report?
the Briefing Report is saved to the SAS install folder, in the 'Help' folder. It is called 'TurnReport.htm' and can be opened in your browser, viewed and printed out like any web page.
This file gets overwritten. If you wanted to keep a history, you could rename this file each turn by adding say the campaign name and turn number to the file name. Then you would have a complete record.
