Hi:
I have a couple of books on modern naval operations that stress carrier ops. One thing that I'm curious about is the personnel who set up the deck operations using the scale planes one a miniature version of the carrier deck. In the pictures I have, they seem to be wearing color coded sweat shirts that look decidely unmilitary. Now I know that deck use color coded vest and helmets to let others know what division they belong to: catapult crew, fueling, armament, etc. Why do these guys wear them? Are they expected to be on the deck? Or does it also distinguish their duties? Also are these sailors officers? Warrant officers? Or master cheif petty officers? Thanks for any insights.

Ed,
They wear colored jerseys in Flight Deck Control for the same reason they wear them on the Flight Deck. If they step on the Flight Deck, everyone will know what they do and where they should be. The colors are as described in Chris' link. Everyone working on the "roof" wears a colored jersey, regardless of rank. Khakis usually have their title stenciled on the back, and on their cranials.
When you look at the plot (mock flight deck) in Flight Deck Control, you'll notice that the shapes for the aircraft do not necessarily look like airplanes. That is because the shapes represent the aircraft in their wings stowed condition, which is what their flight deck multiple is based upon.
Moving aircraft around is a big deal and requires coordination between the Handlers, Flight Deck Control, Pri Fly, CIC and the EOOW. Starting from even trim, zero list, moving an EA-6B from the "Junkyard" (I'm used to it being called the "Hummer Hole" on the CVNs) to the "Finger" will put a 1/4 degree port list on the ship. Move five or six planes without telling the EOOW and List Control, and the Flight Deck will get shut down until we can level the ship.
Hope this helps.
