Up until this point I never knew how Rommel had actually died. Reading the thread of the Veteran who was credited with wounding the General, made me curious so I decided to do a google search.
I wonder if he really did not know about the concentration camps until 1943. Was he actually behind the plot to kill Hitler?
I was always under the impression that he simply died an old man, but wow. To be forced to commit suicide, in order to save your family. Such a shame that he gained so much respect from his troops, and even the Allied troops, and then his own Nation betrays him.
Hitler truely did not know any bounds.

Stalin seriously concidered having Zukov and Koniev killed in 49-50 but the Korean War provided enough of a distraction to avoid that. Saddam often killed his best and most popular commanders for the same reasons with "Helocopter Crashes".

Regarding Sodamm. I watched a documentary on that iddiot not too long ago.
It was talking about the war between Iraq, and Iran. Iran was really kicking the crap of the Iraqi army, and Sodom called a meeting to ask his advisors what to do. Iran was willing to withdrawl if Sodom steped down from power.
Sodom's best friend and top advisor, offered an idea. He said to Sodom "perhaps you could fake a step down. You could announce that you where leaving the office, and fake an overthrow, then when Iran's armies pulled back, just resume your rule."
For that sugestion, the advisor was executed, cut into little peaces, and then placed in a bag. The execution squad then placed the bag by the front door of the man's home. His wife was unfortunate enough to find it, and when she opened it, well you can imagine the rest.

DJ:
Historically, Rommel probably was aware of the plot while not being part of the actual conspiracy. If so, by the oath he swore, he was honor bound to at least inform his superiors of the plot. Considering that he was recovering from wounds after being strafed, he was obviously not an active conspirator. Hitler being paranoid as hell and letting Himmler assume far too much control decided to sacrifice one of his best generals and use a lame excuse that he died from his wounds to cover the deed. A fool can take good people down with him.
