View Full Version : Neutrals?

Are neutral nations simulated in any way in SAS?
More specifically:
I understand that their military forces will NOT be simulated, either in direct or indirect way, but
- will fixed installations (mainly ports) be represented in the game?
- will it be possible to invade a neutral country and - if so - how will resource expenditure be simulated for the invading party? [I'm thinking, as usual, to a Med Scenario, in which episodes like the invasion of Greece or of Vichy France could be replicated and would have significant *strategic* impact on the positions of British and Italian players]

Thank you

As of now, there is no representation of white shipping or neutral countries; just Good Guys and Bad Guys.

Tony may have something up his sleeve; but, if he does, he's not telling his Beta Testing Serfs.... :p

Neutrals

some time ago (21st May) I asked the following - pt 3 may be relevant

"This is exactly the sort of naval warfare version of TOAW that I had been looking for to game an AH that I am working on (in summary 1941 GB/Dutch vs France following dispute between Dutch & France following break up of belgium).
Does the 'atlantic' map include the channel/north sea ?.
what about the dutch navy - or can i just add them to RN ? - in my AH are allied with UK against France so would have trade with caribean (dutch BC against French cruisers anyone ?)
My AH envisages a BEF in Flanders so would need supply across southern north sea - can I do this by having troops on Dutch soil.
what about coastal forces MTBs and the like- or are they just very small, fast escorts ?
did I read elsewhere that airplanes cant lay mines - can submarines ?
Another pet subject - coastal artillery - or is this effectively just defences of ports
Do ports and airbases have AA defences ?
That aside ------- wow bring it on ( and soon) !!!

Millsy - answers below:
Q1: Yes
Q2: We have the de Ruyter and Tromp already included; nothing else of the Dutch navy so far but you can build your own and give them dutch class and ship names
Q3: yes
Q4: nothing smaller than a small sloop of several hundred tons will be in release 1. We may add MTBs later - yet to be decided
Q5: airplanes can't, neither can subs although giving subs minelaying is one of the first things I'd add to a second release
Q6: artillery only acts in defence of ports
Q7: yes - the amount is a function of their infrastructure, which can be developed, as well as degraded by enemy attack.

I'm venturing into Tony's realm here....

There are no neutral countries in the scenarios we've been testing. The two sides have numerous bases located in different countries which can be bombarded, bombed, blockaded, and invaded. But, there are no non-aligned countries to plunder.

The Pacific scenario/campaign (remember, the two are the same in SAS) has Japanese ships on one side, and US, Aussie and Dutch ships and aircraft on the other.

As far as alternate histories go (I had a devil of a time figuring out what "AH" stood for!), you can have the Germans and Italians fighting over Midway if you want to design the campaign. The Italians bombarding San Francisco? Jananese invading Malta?

It's enough to make Harry Turtledove shed tears of pride....:D

HB - I understand what you are asking, and the nice strategic complexitities that having say Vichy France in the game would bring. I had a simplified version of neutrals in the game several itearations ago but they were taken out because I wanted to do it better. A proper implementation of this involves me in more work than I can justify for release 1.0. But beieve me that it is something I will be working on for a release down the track.

Cheers all

That's more than enough of an answer for me!

Thanks

Poor Tony. He has so much "for a release down the track" that by now he is probably convinced he will spend the rest of his life doing new releases of this game.

And he is probably right if he thinks so, given the ability of dedicated fans such as us to come up with new and exciting things to add to the game. :D

Which thus begs the question: how moddable is it?
