For those surface warfare nuts out there that get excited about such things as figuring out if the Kirishima could have penetrated South Dakota's belt armor if she hit it and what not there is a new update to Nathan Okun's Face Hard program to calculate likely armor penetration.

Kyle:

Has the interface for that program been improved? I found it somewhat confusing to follow. Thanks.

Alas no - someone needs to contact Mr. Okun and figure out how to put FaceHard into Excel or something. It's clunky but it's the best thing out there that I know of.

Thanks Kyle. I realize that is a lot of work for Nathan and it's really a labor or love so to speak.

If the formula's are available, I can put them into a spreadsheet.

I think the formula are available on his website

Kyle/Dennis,

Someone did create an Excel version of Facehard, I had a copy in the past, although at first look I cannot find it in my backups -- unfortunately I don't recall who created it or where to look on the web...sorry.

There was an implementaion of Facehard/M79APCLC as a nifty Windows program, it was called "Naval Armor and Ballistics v1.0". From my testing of it in the past it appeared to be an accurate implementation. It can be found at the following URL:

http://www.panzer-war.com/Naab/NAaB.html

Here is part of the "Readme" notes from the Help menu of the program:

"The armor penetration is based on the FACEHARD and M79APCLC programs by
Nathan Okun. The ballistics is based on the MCTRAJ program by Robert McCoy.
Windows programming by Steven Lorenz."

Thanks, William. I could not find the new formulas on the website, but I might just use the old ones and build an excel spreadsheet. There might be a way, if I remember how, to build an Excel input screen and then pass the parameters to the basic program that he has written. I've done it but it was a lonnnnng time ago.

Gotta make macro's n stuff. All alot of hard work.

Consider making it in Microsoft Access. With that you could (if with a licensed copy) host the program on a web page so people put the data into the cover sheet then get a PDF file with the result after they have input their data. Might be able to do the same with excel but i am not aware how with excel.

Gents,

I found the Facehard spreadsheet -- it was created by Roy McCammon (IIRC he was a member on our old forum) with Nathan Okun's permission, and is based on v5.8 of the Facehard formulas.

Unfortunately I cannot post it here as it specifies that the file can only be posted with the original Facehard v5.8 files.

In researching the use of Excel, you can use Visual Basic to write subroutines that could call the FACEHARD executable and pass the parameters to it from the spreadsheet. It has just been so long, that it would be easier to have the new formulas and simply develop a list input parameters then execute the formula. I get a headache, thinking about it.

Thanks for trying! Maybe Roy might take a stab at updating it using the new Facehard program. Depends on how interested he is in that sort of stuff these days.

I can't remember, but did someone put this link up on the forum some time back. Anyway, here it is again.

Dennis:

Yes, that's also on the navweaps site as well. My only problem is that it is not easy to read with all the abbreviations. Perhaps if an example had been given as to how to read the tables then maybe it would be of more use. That's what I was hoping the new FaceHard upgrade might have done.
