Well, I got lucky and my son returned the old 933 Pentium that my father gave me. I loaded Win98, updated and loaded SP, SPII and SPIII. Started the initial scenario just to ensure that the game ran as planned. It was great to see the old game running properly.

Now I have to figure out how to install the NWS version of fighting Steel so I can sink Hood.

I have some old Talonsoft games that will be fun and Panzer General series. Hmm!

Hi Dennis,

Being a total computer illiterate, my eyes glaze over at the discussions at how to tweak your newer system to run older games, if possible. I haven't been able to get Mig Alley to run on my Pentium 4.0 Gig I have an old 486 amd my Falcon NW Pentium II for my older games. I bought the Falcon based upon their reputation for customer service, but never used it. That box was bullet proof and everything ran without a hitch! Drivers, schmivers! I still enjoy playing an old British computer game called Dreadnoughts by Peter Turcan where you typed in your command orders and it had 3D (well, for 1990 with shell splashes). A great advance over Action Stations though the latter was much more realistic. Makes me wish I had kept my old Microprose Task Force 1942!

A friend I met back in 1986 (!) got me into computer gaming with his Apple IIc. No graphics, all text on a green screen. I believe the game was called "Guadalcanal". Amazing how those few beeps that preceeded "20 Kates attacking Enterprise" could be! When Harpoon came out, I just had to get a computer of my own though my first game was Microprose's old Red Storm Rising.

I can tweak XP without a problem. It's hard to get by the speed because some games just move the screen maps too fast. The Pentium 3 933 mhz Gateway that I got back, is perfect and with Win98, I am a happy little camper. Just finished playing PG III. I am going to look for some older games that ran well on this type of system.

I am having a lot of fun, can't beat that.

And I thought I was the only wargamer that still used older PC's for gaming!

I still have a 386/33, 486/66, AMD 233, P3 866, and my Alien P4 3.5 and my latest Duel Core system.

I love playing all my TalonSoft Battleground games, Steel Panthers, West and East Front, and the Close Combat series on my older PC's, and every once in a while playing Red Baron, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, and Their Finest Hour:Battle of Britain on my old 286/33.

Mike:

I hear ya sir! PCs were supposed to take all the book keeping away from gaming and let you concentrate on the game. Too bad most games today want fancy graphics. Let's go NAWWC! (Shameless commercial plug).

You ever get the "Sea Lion" module for the Talonsoft West Front game, Dennis?

Yes, I have the West Front Operation Sea Lion and the Battle Pack 1. I also have East Front and the Campaign CD 1, TOAW II Elite Edition, Flashpoint Kosovo.

OK, just checking as I've still got an unopened copy of Sea Lion. It was "end wages" for being one of the beta playtesters of that module back in '99.

The Campaign Series was one of the classics for me in those days. Its platoon-level scale was "tactical" enough to capture some differences in direct-fire effects between various weapons systems, while also allowing map scales for the grand-tactical maneuver of larger formations such as battalions, brigades and divisions (and, for some more hardy souls, multi-division).

Unfortunately, the more inconsistent features of the game mechanics such as the artillery effects and fortifications did not bode for me to stay with the CS system. Perhaps if these were addressed (among others) in the more recent Matrix re-make, I'd consider trying again.

I appreciate the offer, thanks. I am stupid, but what is the Campaign series? East/West front and all the later additions.

Yup! That's what it does! When I attempt to load West Front on my Win98 system, it actually does the install and when you go to examine the subdirectory under Talonsoft, it disappears and is gone.

I've attempted loading it from the HD, still does it. I've loaded the rest of the Talonsoft series, no problems. It loads onto my XP media center.

In examining the system, it appears that the buffer on the the HD might be the problem. I am going to load sysinternals Process Monitor and see if I can find the problem.

Anyway, it keeps me busy. :D

Tch. I just remembered one other classic published under Talonsoft back in '98.

At that time, TS started trying to "branch out" to try other than history-based wargames. Among these ventures was publishing Sir-Tech's "Jagged Alliance 2".

Getting past the bugs, that was a really fun bit of escapism. :D

Hi Spook,

Another great game I still have on my Falcon Pentium. Haven't played it in a while and satiate my squad battle needs with Fallout Tactics. I still have XCOM on the hard drive too.

I never did try the Fallout system, but I did play the original XCOM game too. Yeah, that was a gem too, how it mixed its strategic layers with its turn-based tactical combat.

By the time I had enough XCOM squaddies outfitted with the hover-capable armor suits and packing the highest weapons upgrades, I felt as if I was playing characters out of R. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" book.

I suppose I'd better place an order soon for the Matrix re-make of XCOM, "UFO Terrestrials" --- when I have the time to play it!! (Hard to find time now.) And when I do, NWS, I will order thru here. ;)

Hi Spook,

I loved naming the squadies after co workers and using the less popular ones as canon fodder. : ) I was unare there was a remake, I'll have to check it out.
