Hi:
While doing some research on naval ranks, I found out that the Navy plans on replacing the various uniforms with one standard working set based on a digital camo scheme like the Army and Marines use, only with haze gray and blue as the predominant colors. Dress uniforms will remain the same. Any thoughts from our former and current naval people?

Some change, particularly in work uniforms, would be welcome. The dungaree pants and chambray shirt that was the enlisted men's working uniform looked like it was purchased from a prison supply company! (which is probably why were weren't allowed to wear them off base!).

Actualy they are the same as those issued to federal prisoners. I have seen them they don't look all that bad. When I was in I always wore coveralls when ever I could weather I needed to or not even as a PO.

Don't even get me started....
Geez are they still going on about that? This has been going on for like 10 years now. Somehow I think they will stil be talking about it 10 years from now.

Gray cammies that we can't wear on ships....what's up with that? As if cammies will do any good onboard a ship....
Sounds like the plastic Summer Whites we can't wear on ships....the guy who invented CNTs should burn in Hell....
Dress Khakis...I'm okay with that....tres traditional....
Black and Tans for Enlisted....where in the hell did they dig that one up?! Somebody's forgotten why we have Khakis in the first place....
And, just why are we drifting away from our traditional uniforms? Don't get me wrong, dungarees were a royal pain for the Enlisted folks, but Cracker Jacks and Summer Whites and Working Khakis....
When a military strays from its traditions, it becomes simply a job.
It's really hard to declare loyalty to a job.

When we were at sea, we were allowed to wear dark blue "FBM (fleet ballistic missile) coveralls, known to the crew as "poopy suits" )though I don't know where they got that name).

Scott remember the old salt and peppers of the early to late 70's when the navy wanted all enlisted to look like chiefs. One of my cousens served during that time and he hated it. As E-6 and below dont have any extra storage space, eg one combo cover takes up the same space as 6 white hats. FYI for all you non sailors the average enlisted E-6 and below lives in a space slightly smaller than a phone booth. I know this because me and some buddies figured it out for grins and giggles.

They're called "Coffin Racks" for a reason....
I came in just as Salt and Peppers were being phased out. I survived the initial implementation of "Certified Navy Twill", Navy-ese for "100% Polyester and Flammable as Hell". Half the time the dry cleaners melted the fabric when pressing the uniforms....
The standard shipboard uniform is blue coveralls, similar to the Submarine Service's poopy suits (I believe the term originated either from their resemblence to a child's "Bunny Suit" sleep wear, or to the Tyvex coveralls worn when connecting/disconnecting sewage lines).

While not in the Navy I think its a brilliant idea, like many brilliant ideas the navy has. The use of camo in shipboard uniforms is extremely useful. The need for concealment shipboard is a constant worry, I'm sure. Will the cooks have a digital "kitchen camo" so they can blend into the hot table? Very useful.

Scott:
From what I have read, I get the idea that the brass wants the navy to have a unified working uniform just like the Army and Marines do. Now why digital camo is beyond me. The only sailors who need camo are the SEALS.
I remember seeing my friend who as a nuclear engineer (O-3 when he left service) wearing his blue poopy suit one day after he got off duty and was joining me for some gaming.

Ed, You forgot the SEABEE's they also use cammies. The problems with the Navy trying to have a unified working uniform is tradition. From my time in the navy the chance to see a khaki uniform dirty was very very rare to never. ie smudged with grease, oil, paint good old fashioned dirt. In the army and marines you see dirty uniforms all the time in the field

Ed,
Lots of our sailors on on "Individual Augmentation (IA)" assignments to very unfriendly, land-based parts of the world: Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Saudi, etc, and wear cammies. I had desert and woodland BDUs, but never had to wear them.
And, don't forget: the Marines do not have Medics - they are all USN Corpsmen. One stationed here in Corpus Christi was awarded a Silver Star a couple of years ago.

Good points. In that case, the Navy should just adopt the Marine camo for shore deployments and stick to their traditional on ship uniforms. I never thought this topic would arose such interest. Thanks.
