I thought this would a nice topic, just to find out what everyone favorite games are.

Mine are has follow Fleet Command, Star Trek Armada 2, X2 The Threat and X3 Reunion, GCB and GCB2. They are my favorite because of the mod ability of these games and that I can add my own model's to the games. :D

Hi Fleet,
My all time favourites are as follows:
Panzer General II and III, Pacific General, Mechwarrior III and IV and expansions, Fleet Command, Dangerous Waters, Matrix games - War Plan Orange, Carriers at War and Uncommon Valour, Medieval Total War I and II, and all HPS and NWS games.
They are mostly old games, but I still enjoy them.
Jon :)

Steel Panthers 1 & 2 (love to play this at the cabin on an old 486/66)

Blitzkrieg Series (thousands of user made mods and new maps, and bought 2 expansions from NWS)

Combat Mission Series (always great and enjoy adding new mods)

I have hundreds of games, but these are the ones that never seem to leave my hard drives at home.

These are a few of my favorite things...

Star Fleet Command: Orion Pirates (yep, old one but I had it on my drive longer than anything)
Action Stations (still the best surface warship simulation)
Oblivion (ok, yes - an RPG :o)
Red Baron (ah, those were the days. Wish they made a new version that was identical as far as game play but updated graphics to today's standard).
Aces of the Deep
Steel Panthers (WW2 and MBT)
Warship Combat (of course!)
Wizardry series (another old one)
Carrier Force (yep, one more oldie)

And since you said games, not just computer ones... Squad Leader series, Advanced Squad leader, Panzerblitz (and Pzleader), War at Sea (the original AH game from long ago), Bismarck (Avalon Hill again) and last but not least... Sorry!

Scott:

I'm a big fan of OGRE/GEV, those games got me back into gaming in 1979-80. THe Fantasy Trip was a fun beginners RPG, but I prefered the percentile and skill based system of Runequest, although I was never a Glorantha fan. Battletech has been probably my most heavily invested game in terms of supplements, minis, etc. Too bad I rarely have time to play anymore.

Ed,

There is supposed to be a new OGRE/GEV offering sometime next year. I think it's supposed to be a reprint/update of the original game with larger, more sturdy counters (possibly plastic playing pieces). SJG's been a bit vague, but they do seem to be committed to new products. They just released a new Oger miniature, the "Ninja" from the miniatures rules, and revamped the minis rules. We'll see.

A company called Dark City Games is publishing TFT/GURPS-compatible solitaire modules ala the old MicroQuests. They cover the "Ancient" world (fantasy and Roman), Sci-Fi, and the Old West. The modules are very well done, with full color playing pieces. The adventures tend to be a bit more sophisticated than TFT. More Orb Quest/Grail Quest than Master of the Amulets or Death Test. None of the tongue in cheek you'd find from Tunnels and Trolls.

I've never played Runequest or Battletech; I focused my scarce resources on TFT and T&T.

Never did try Starfleet Armada. I did forget one game that was a favorite back when I had opponents - Star Fleet Battles (the board game). Back when I was in the Navy I played a LOT of that, and that's part of the reason I liked SFC - very similar. I was into the online gaming in SFC, fighting human (well, Klingon, Romulan, etc) opponents. Got my moneys worth out of that game for sure.
The games that have the longest life are the ones that are moddable by the "fans". SFC is still going though with fewer followers, and they're still doing online wars with dozens of players on at once. It just finally got to monotonous for me, though I did have fun the last time I went online. Everyone thought I was a newbie...bwah hah hah - Slaughtered a Federation Dreadnought with a Lyran Battlecruiser, heh heh.

Hey ED Rotondaro

What are the OGRE/GEV games? You've lost me with these games.

Fleet:

OGRE/GEV are two small board games originally published by Metagaming back in the late 1970s. They were designed by Steve Jackson, the owner of SJ Games today. They cover futuristic armored combat. The Ogre was a large robotic tank with many different weapon systems (based on the Bolos from Keith Laumer's sci-fi). The other forces were more conventional units, tanks, missile carriers, hovercraft, howitzers and infantry. GEV was an expansion to the system that added new units, and more detailed rules. Both games plus several supplements are still available from SJ Games and for awhile there was a deluxe boxed set with metal miniatures.

One of the funnest Steve Jackson games was CarWars. Talk about road warrior. Motorcycles with mini-guns in the sidecar. Limos with SAM's in the trunk and 20mm vulcans under the hood.

John:

Yeah I remember that one. Started out interesting but rapidly got silly. In fact SJ Games seems to be more interested in humorous titles than in serious games, but if that's what sells, then more power to them.

Computer (in no particular order)

Medieval Total War II
Fleet Command
Fighting Steel (now defunct)
Civ IV (though they limited city expansion too much)
I used to love Starfleet Command and the beautiful ship mods until someone stole my disk.
WCDB
Everquest 2

I played ST Armada before, but there weren't enough ship types for me, and the lack of automated special abilities made it difficult to keep up with.

Table Top Games:

Gulf Strike
Victory Games Fleet series
Squad Leader and its expansions
Task Force
War at Sea/Victory in the Pacific
Midway
Shadowrun
And I've recently gotten involved in a D&D game ... though it's 4th Edition, which I don't care for much. The game now plays like an MMO. That's what happens when people design games for the lowest common denominator.

Oh, I almost forgot ... Harpoon (table top version). Nothing like commandeering grandma's old dining room table while they're on vacation, putting in all the leaves, getting out the rulers, protractors, data sheets, dice, Doritoes, pizza, and then going to town.

The best games ever - IMHO only, of course - are Star Control II, and X-COM UFO Defense.

Then there are some others that I either still play regularly, or used to player all the time in their days:

Populous
Civilization 1, 2 and 3
Colonization (the original one - although the remake is good, too)
Pirates (the original one - although the remake is VERY good, too)
Alpha Centauri
War in the Pacific
Industrial Giant 2
Transport Giant
Caesar 2 and 3
Zeus
All of the Total War series
All of the Great Naval Battles series
Master of Orion 1 and 2
Several of the X-COM remakes
Battle of Britain and 12 O´Clock High

I had the good fortune of having, at that time, a girlfriend who really loved trains (though not as much as she loved me), so she understood and shared that passion. She was also studying history at the time, focussing on Roman history, so you can guess what happened when I introduced her to Caesar 2... ;)

Hi Guys,

I met my wife when I first got into computer gaming through my friend with his Apple MAC. I was thinking about getting acomputer, but thought it was a lot of money for something to play games on (They're not games, they're simulations!). She chimed in and said, "if your really want it, you should get." She rues that day! : ) But it's cheaper than a Harley for a mid life crisis. I originally bought it for "Harpoon", but the local Egghead was sold out so I settled for "Redstorm Rising". My first experience with vaporware was waiting for "Carriers At War" to come out as it was delayed almost a year.

I love "Railroad Tycoon II" more than III. I'd like to buy the new "Carriers At War", but it only has the original sceanrios rather than the other two installments. "Half Life" and "Half Life 2" were a lot of fun as was "Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel" I always wondered how computer games were cheaper than their console bretheren, being more complicated and selling in much smaller numbers. Those console companies are making a killing.

WCBC - The only tactical naval wargame for the first half of the 20th. century I've come
across in the last five years. Reminds me a bit of the old "Battlewagon" board

The Guns Of August - The only strategic WWI wargame for the PC I've seen.

Age Of Sail - An old one, but for sailing warfare I've yet to see it topped.

Title Bout II - The best boxing sim I've ever seen.

Dave Koch Football, Baseball, and Basketball - The most accurate team sports sims out
there.

Quest Hockey - See above but for hockey.

TNM Wrestling - Just for giggles!

Shredder Chess - About the most powerful playing software you can buy.

Looking forward to:

Herr Admiral,

I'll vouch for David Koch sports as well. I use to play A.P.B.A. football years ago. Their PC version of the game was so bad that A.P.B.A. finally pulled it off the market and have never replaced it.

I searched high and wide for a replacement and stumbled upon DK Sports. Boy am I glad I did. Not only are his games excellent, but he is a great guy and very easy to deal with. He bends over backwards to keep his customers satisfied. Only other person I've seen that matches Chris for dedication to customer service.

Hi Ed,

No, I wish she was so I could get an employee discount. :) Your right about prices. I paid $1900.00 for my first 386SX in 1990, about the same for my 486DX a couple of years later, and a little less for my Pentium 4 gig from 3 years ago. monitor prices are down too...I currently use an NEC 17" LCD my got for about $700.00 about 5 years ago...woudl love one of those $399.00 24" wide screens from Costco. Wonder if Sant a shops there? :)

Why not just buy a HDTV, you will get the best of both worlds then, a high res TV and a high res monitor.
I bought a 32" Samsung HDTV :) back 2006 and I have never look out back, then I upgrade to a 50" Samsung  last year, now I'm think about getting a 60" :cool. The only problem I have found is you just want to keep going bigger, but I guess you can see that from what I have said above.

Just to put in my few cents.. my favorite publisher by far is HPS. Being a classic wargamer for nearly 30 years their games remind me of great board games I used to, and now getting back into again, play. Take your pick of their designs.. I own nearly all of them.

I also play a lot of BF2142 and BF2. Other favorites includ Empire Earth 2 Gold, Rise of Nations Gold, TOAW3, Harpoon3, Starfleet Command Series, the original Gunship from 1984, Railroad Tycoon 3, Railroads, Civ 4 Complete, Red Baron 3D, Supreme Commander, Star Wars Battlefront Series, SW Empire at War, and so on. I have a collection of around 100 titles but the above are what I have played recently.

Thanks.

Although most of my gaming time is with the games we publish (cdv USA) as I have grown very found of our WW2 RTS games, and the Napoleonic RTS games we also publish, I still find myself drawn to the Combat Mission games from Battlefront when I need that tacticle WW2 fix.

To Von,

If you like the CM series you should really give the HPS Squad Battles series a try. Excellent AI, very good combat mechanics, the ability to pick up weapons, etc.. overall a great series.

Hi Mike:

I have a 17" flat panel on my home PC and we were just upgraded to 20" flat panels at work. That's about as wide a display as I need unless I want to watch movies on my PC. Dell probably has some decent prices on 24" wide screens especially with the holidays coming up.

Yes, I have my share of HPS games...very good games indeed!

I should have had a bank account at Matrix Games a few years ago.

I wish I had the time to do some modding also. Working for a game publisher has limited my time in the last 10 years to only being able to play through games of my choice, but I was able to mod some skins for the Combat Mission series a few years back, and 3 of my scenarios are in the Combat Mission: Anthology Pack.

I only have a daughter who is 20 now and works at a legal firm as she goes to college, but she did enjoy playing MoH and CoD on her playstation 2 a few years back. I'm sure she played them in my behalf, as my wife always lets me know when a WW2 program she spotted on the TV is upcomming yet if she watches them with me she falls asleep.;)

My wife has attended some of our (cdv Software Entertainment) showcasing of games which is nice as we have a great time at the event talking to gamers, and then enjoy fancy dinning, expensive hotels, etc, with the other cdv staff...so it's nice to have a great wife and family that do get involved in my love for wargaming.

Hehe,

I grew up in rural Victoria next to state forest and we used to buy bags upon bags of plastic soldiers from the reject or seconds shop and line them up in the bush and have battle's. We once set a hill on fire when we thought it would be a good idea to have special effects like the movies. Its so funny looking back remembering how much trouble i got into for that because my younger brother was balling his eye's out. Parents thought i had hurt him or something, but he later told them he was upset because we had burnt all his toys and he had nothing to play with. Those were the days .... i still got in trouble even after he admitted that !!

I was really into model building in the 60's and even worked at a hobby shop part time in my high school years. When I was around 15 I had a shelf full of WW2 ships that my mother accidently bumped knocking most of them to the ground. Instead of fixing them I took both models of the Bismarck and the Hood, a box of wooden matches, and hid behind our garage and relived a battle of these two ships, burning holes into the superstucture, and starting fires. When I was done I went into the house and about 10 minutes later my sister ran into the house yelling " there is fire and smoke coming from the garage!". I ran out with my mother and although I was punished for playing with matches...only the Bismarck and Hood were still burning and smoking behind the garage!

Those were the good ol days!

My dad and I destroyed all my old ship models (they were'nt built very well so no loss) in a fun way. We divided up the ships between us. Then we took turns with my bb gun shooting at each others ships. Great fun.
