And he was a Navy man too. He served in the Pacific, as a TBF gunner during the Okinawa landings.

Fleet:

Well done sir. Paul Newman may have been the best actor of his generation (at least an American actor). He never made a bad film.

John:

He defined class and dignity. He was the only American actor that equalled the skill of the great British actors like Laurence Olivier or Alec Guiness. Peter O'Toole is perhaps the last of that generation of great actors.

Have to admit I was shocked to learn of his death. I just loved his acting. He could play anything from "Hud" to Butch Cassidy. I always enjoyed his films, and he was a great humanitarian.

Martin:

I agree, he was very versatile. I loved his last film "The Road to Perdition" with Tom Hanks. I remember seeing a photo of him last year when his spokesman first admitted he was battling cancer. You could see how gaunt he was and how much he had aged. I knew then it was only a matter of time. That coupled with a very depressing article in "Newsweek" magazine on the struggle to conquer cancer really puts it in perspective. If a man lives long enough, he has a 1 in 2 chance of developing some form of cancer (most likely prostate cancer). So don't skip your annual physical exam my friends.

Before you all gush too much about him, you should know Newman was one of those who believed the U.S. was wrong to use the a-bombs to end WWII. He even agreed to play General Groves in a movie about the bombs just so he could portray him in a negative light.

Interesting. But it's important to separate an artist's political views from his or her body of work. If I didn't, I probably never listen to any of my favorite bands.
