Hi All

I decided to give FS a try once again. I bought it years ago and enjoyed it, but inevitably it would crash.

I installed it this evening, but the while installing "Indeo" (I never understood what it is or why it is necessary) tha game froze. First I got a message saying I have a newer version of Indeo already on my computer. Then it froze during the message "looking for Netscape."

After ctrl-alt-del to end the freeze, I installed FSP.

I started up the game, started a random battle, and then the game froze when I tried to turn my division to bring it closer to the enemy.

I have Win XP and a Nvidia 5500 (I think) card.

Is anybody getting FS to run these days? How?

The game had/has huge potential but the crashes and freezes really ruin things. I might as well use the CD as a coaster.

Have you downloaded FSP 10.43? If not, go to the link below to d/l it and the manual:

Yes, I did download the manual.

I then re-installed FS, finally got "Indeo" to install, and then re-installed FSP. Now when I launch the game I just get a black screen. Nothing else. I can't ctrl-alt-del to get out of it. I wound up unplugging the computer to get my desktop back.

Oh well.

I still play the original Age of Sail. It works fine on my computer. We really need a WW1/WW2 version of that game. I used to think FS was going to be that game, but the potential just didn't pan out. When it ran, it was a very fun game.

Thanks anyway for your reply.

Try disabling movies in the ini files. I had the same problem and fixed it this way. :)

Do you mean delete them?

No : in your FS directory, go to INI foler, open DbzLib.Ini with Notepad, and set the lines that switch movies off, they are :
INTRO = 0
MOVIES = 0

Thank you for the advice.

I disabled the intro and movies and the game started up just fine. I then generated a (small) battle and began playing it. What beautiful ships! I was really getting involved in the game. My German ships detected the British, and I ordered a change in course so that my force could engage the enemy.

Shortly after the course change was entered, the game froze. I waited a while to see if it would un-freeze, but it didn't.

What a disappointment. I'm *really* disappointed.

Are there any other options out there for those of us who want to play realistic-appearing WW2 or WW1 naval combat simulations?

Ah well. Thank you very much anyway for your advice.

This evening I will console myself by popping open a beer (or two) and relaxing with "Jane's Fighting Ships of World War I" and "U-boat Commanders and Crews." :)

To Antonin, did you make sure to install our FSP v10.43? Without it.. FS will crash due to changes in the DirectX code since FS was first published. New FAQ posted here;

As noted in another post, try downloading and installing Fighting Steel Project. If your version of Direct X is 9.x or 10.x (start> run, type in "dxdiag" and press enter. The version will be at the bottom of the first tab), the original version will not work.You must have FSP 10x on your computer for it to work. Otherwise you will crash as soon as you attempt to change course.
