Are they nuts or what?
Three of my uncles just completed a float trip that was nearly 2000 miles long.
Here is the route
The put in on the Arkansas R in Muskogee OK, They went down river to the Mississippi R. Then down to New Orleanes. From NO they took the Inland Waterway to Moble AL. From there they went up the Tombigbee R to the Tenn-Tom Canal through the canal to the Tennessee R. Then up the Tennessee to the Ohio R and down Ohio to the Mississippi. Then down to the Arkansas R and then back to Muskogee.
Whats so crazy about it, well my uncles are not exactly young in fact these three should be considering retirement homes.
They are
Dale 84
George 80
Walt 78
They did have enough sence to bring along one of the great grand kids to help out but she was only 19

Wow! What a great trip.
I say more power to them! Except for those who, for special reasons, need them retirement homes are an abomination. Concentration camps for us to throw away our elderly until they die.
I'm only 53 and I've already told my kids not to even try putting me in one of those places when I get older. When the time comes, I'll just go "walkabout" until the end comes.

Kurt, I said retirement home not a nursing home. Maybe I should have said Assisted Living Facility

John,
Don't worry about it. The phraseology isn't important.
For some people, various kinds of centralized living arrangements have real value. I had a wonderful great aunt who lived in an assisted living center. She never developed mentally past approximately 12 years old for some reason. But she lived into her 80's. She lived with one of her brothers (she had four) until all but one of them had died. He was even older than her and couldn't care for her. That last brother was my grandfather. He, my mom and my sister decided to put her in the home. I thought that one of us should take care of her. But, during her remaining few years there she seemed happy. So for her it was a good idea.
I believe that there are many others, however, who have been dumped in one of those places because they are inconvenient. I deplore that deeply.
My opinions aside, I think the trip you mention sounds amazing. But as you say, it was certainly risky. I'm glad everything turned out all right.

John:
Maybe trips like that are the reason why they are still spry and kicking. Don't give in to age.

Personaly I think it is that all three make a mule seem the soul of coperation. Walt was injured in a car accedent about 15 years ago and was left disabled about 40% and George was a old time saw mill owner and worker, he has IIRC about 4.5 fingers between both hands. And still spry and kicking my grandfather there father retired as farmer at age 80 when my uncle Galen sold or bought all of his farm equipment and belive me when I say that my grandpa defined the word stubbern

I'm glad to see that you are more amenable than your stubborn relatives LOL!
