Looks cool fc cc, you're getting better at this. Why not make some real world units so they do get added to NWS? Or are you making your own Sci-Fi mod for FC?

From my experience, here are some common reasons why models don't work in FC:
- Model exceeds poly/vertex limit. That's the most likely cause for these models considering how detailed they are. You can reduce polys by weld vertices, but it needs to be done smartly so maximum number of polys are eliminated for minimum loss of detail (I'd use target weld)
- Single part exceeds poly/vertex limit. Just break large parts down to smaller parts
- Multiple materials applied to single part. For some reason, FC just has problems with those sometimes
- Part is oversized. This results in flickering when the game engine fluctuateds between low detail vs high detail model. The model may be done in different units and converted to another unit. Check to see if size is 1:1 with real world, using 3DS max standard units (do not specify unit)

Hi, I've been creating some models with Anim8or but I have a question before I submit them to Mike to be converted to J3D - what dimensions should I make the objects (presumably I need to make a Handley page Victor bigger than a Hawker Hunter?) or is the size configured by the game?
Anyway, so far I've completed: Hawker Hunter, Handley Page Victor, P2 Neptune, Folland Gnat, Mystere IV, Supermarine Scimitar, Vautour, Sea Hawk, F-86 Sabre, QH-50 and I'm working on a few others (F-9 Cougar, Sea Venom, and some land targets)
I've attached some images, I'm new to modelling and Anim8or's not 'amazing', but I think they're good and I'd like to get them up and running as soon as possible as J3D files so I can make sure they work ok.

Actually these are bloody good!
Fo size I like to see them scaled to actual size or close. But even some of the stock graphics that came with FC are odd sized. In the db I define a size but that is just used for RCS, sonar detection and launcher location. Graphical/visual size is defined by the model. So the closer to actual you can get it the better.
Also I'm having a problem with my 3D Max so I can't do conversions right now. If there is someone else that can do the conversion untill I have time to fix my system I'd apreciate it.

Hey Sean ...
Would it be possible to work on some of the old graphics, as well?
I'd love to see new graphics for the MiG-29, the Typhoon, the F-22, and the Gripen. Since they're so frequently used and important aircraft, having good graphics would be, well ... good. :)
And thanks for the work! I'd give anything right now to be able to make models. I'd be cranking them out left and right.

Hey Saffron
You want to have a go it's not too hard, :) I thought it was when I first had go, but you get better by just playing round with simple model's, if you don't try you will never know.

I did try it about a year or so ago, but I couldn't even get started. What I really needed was a guide that starts from scratch. When I tried before, I couldn't even figure out the basics like how to move the image around on my screen. All of the online tutorials assume you know those things. I ended up staring at my screen unable to do anything.

You want to give Max 9 a try, the basic are easier to find in the program it's self.
Load Max 9
Left click Help,
Left click Tutorials,
Left click Maximize,
Left click Introductory Tutorials,
Then just look through all the different sub category, and you should be well on your way to doing some graphic modelling. :D

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. I'm e-mailing fleetcoommandcc today to try a couple out, then I'll sort the scales etc.
I've attached some more images of all the models I've completed so far - most are 1950's aircraft in use by other countries in the 60s and 70s and are useful for India, Pakistan, Israel, Argentina etc.
Once I've sorted these models and made sure they all work, I'm going to work on some land targets next (bridges etc) and then I'll look through the threads for new models needed and then re-work any old ones that might benefit.
(I can only attach 5 images at a time, so there are a few posts to get them all in.

One more thing (then I'll stop posting and get on with some work!) lots of people said in their replies that modelling was something they would like to try, but they can't do it - I downloaded Anim8or (whhich is free) two days ago and I've quickly picked up a method for making aircraft - if these work, I'll create a step by step guide on a word document (with screenshots) taking you through each stage modelling an aircraft and then hopegully others will give it a go. (If they don't work I'll be )

I'll start work on the step by step guide soon - especially now that the models have been tested in FC and a few issues I wasn't expecting came up (especially the difference between the colour difference for FC and the model size!)
A big, big thanks to Fleetcommand CC for converting the files and I've attached some images of my very serious and rigorous testing!;)
The colour of the models still need adjusting, so they're not ready for sending yet Mike.
Once these models are completely finished, I've trawled through the unit request thread and I'll model the following:
LAND UNITS
Bridge (large, medium, small)
Rail Yard
Electrical substation
Radio tower
SHIPS
Ice breaker (generic, but I'll propbably base it on HMS Endurance)
AIRCRAFT
Avro Shackleton
Lockheed EC 121
MIG 17
Gulfstream (generic business jet)
F101
F102/6
Fairey Gannet AS.4 (as far as I know they only served with Australia, Uk and Germany and only Aus. and Germany after '65)
I considered the F2 Banshee, but unlike the F9s, they were def. out of service (even with Canada) by '62
I'll use one of the aircraft for the step by step guide.

Gannets AS.4 was also operated by Indonesia which bought some in 59 I think and my sources say some "other countries" and I'm trying to figure them out My old list said Chile and Czechs but I think and dragged a little to far on excel. Change- These "other countries" seem to just be evaluations of single or few a/c by nations that didn't by (like Canada) or retired birds used for trials work (like in the US).

Looking at the DASH graphic I can't help but think how far we've come in UAVs. BAck in the 60's DASH was laughed at and farcical. Now we have Global Hawk and Predators etc. WOnder what those critcs would say now. DASH may not have been ultra sucessful but it's legacy is in the skies as we speak.

A reminder to all graphics designers.
We don't accept or use units that are specifically flagged for a country or service. For the F-4 alone this would require about 15 unique graphics which takes up 15 times the space and 15 times the memory and causes us 15 times the headache to maintain. Add on units like the F-16 which would require 26 unique graphics and the size of the db, the size of the NWP install, the maintainability just becomes imposable.
We currently do have some flagged units in NWP but that's because that was the only graphic we had or because the graphic was incredibly good. That basis will be used in the future on a case by case basis.

Everyone that has a new, non-nation stamped graphic that is better then the current NWP graphic or not in NWP (have to add a few qualifiers) get them to Warrior. I'm working on a mini-release to fix a few bugs and I want to get the graphics tested and added to the release if they pass muster.

Well I tried using the new Su-27 graphic, but it seems to want to use the old skin. The new model shows up fine, but it's using the old Su-27 skin, so the plane looks all funky with the wrong skin. Any ideas how to correct it?
I tried running the .bat file by itself. Do I need to run the nwp graphic installer as well?
Actually I tried running the .bat file that came with the model ... I ran the nwp files too ... and when that didn't work, I tried to use the command line to fix it, but nothing seems to work.

I've got a F-5, B-52 STRATOFORTRESS, A-10, F-104, but there are two problems. First one is getting them to work in FC, the second copyright problems.
Hmm.... you don't think the owner will let you use them if you give him credit?

Nope its not that, its the license of use, I think they can only be used for personal use.

Hey Mike,
Thats great thanks, let me know.
This is the most important part to me.
If you wish to include some 3D data of our models in your application (videogames, simulators, 3D applications, etc) you must license a corporte license.
I think they have made a mistake there what do you think?
It should say,
If you wish to include some 3D data of our models in your application (videogames, simulators, 3D applications, etc) you must have a corporte license.

Wow. F-14 looks great. I was wonder onr thing though. Could the bmp file be redone in just gray with no camo pattern. The only reason I ask this is because I have not been able to find any images of F-14s being painted this way. But like I said before, great work.

I'd love to see a model for swept-wing aircraft that have their wings in combat position. Aircraft didn't generally fight with the wings swept all the way back, did they?
steel_selachian
03-27-2009, 05:39 PM
Well, the haze-gray scheme is more fit for the paint jobs of the 80s and 90s - I know we've got a moratorium on nationality-specific models and skins, but I'd kind of like to see a desert camo pattern for the Iranian F-14s in the game. When I see the original FC model with USN VF-1 markings on it flying back to an Iranian airbase I half expect to see the flight crew light it on fire

Yep that can be done, anyone can have a go at doing it, just open the GM-F-14.bmp file with any image editing program, and change it to what you what.

This can be done, but the wing movement is name specific, i.e for the F-14 to have sweeping wings.
The Object Record name needs to be ( F-14 Tomcat ) and the 3DObject Record name needs to be ( F-14 Tomcat ), also this will only work on the F-14. :(

Actually I just meant to have a model of a swept wing aircraft with the wings somewhere in the middle (I think that's the position the wings are in most of the time). Even if they can't move. Currently all swept-wing aircraft are always modeled with the wings "tucked in" against the fusalage ... the MiG-23, the Su-22, the B-1, the F-111, etc.

Hey FCCC and Blip Commander.
When you do up a skin for aircraft, can you do it with the J3d or do you have to do it on the 3DS model? Also, how would you do it?

Hey FCCC and Blip Commander.

There are two parts to skinning. First you have to tell the software which area on the bitmap corresponds to which part of the 3D model. You do that by laying out the polygons on an imaginary plane, it's called "unwrapping." This can only be done in 3DS. The second part is actually drawing the skin. When you actually draw the skin, you can make any changes you want in the bmp and it will reflect in the model and you don't need to modify the 3DS for that. But you have to know which part of the bitmap correspond to which part of the model.

Hey FCCC and Blip Commander.
When you do up a skin for aircraft, can you do it with the J3d or do you have to do it on the 3DS model? Also, how would you do it?
Warrior
It all about what you would like to do with the skin, if you have already got a skin for the model then you can change it to whatever you would like to. For example take the vulcan.bmp file, you can change the colour and design of the skin.
Example 1
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss62/fleetcommandcc/3D%20Models/vulcan_test1.jpg
Example 2
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss62/fleetcommandcc/3D%20Models/vulcan_test2.jpg
If the model hasn't got a skin to start with, you will need to map the model Co-ordinates. Then export the model to an .3ds file, then import the .3ds into a program like LithUnwrap V1.3 and save the model map co-ordinate in a .bmp file. Then you can do the texture skinning in any image editing program.

Yes that's right if the model hasn't already got a texture skin, but if the model has you can modify the skin to whatever you like. The only problem with this is if you don't know what the parts are on the skin it will be a bit (or should I say a lot) of trial and error. ;)

Pretty good - what streak effect are you referring to?
Also, since we're working on the Virginia, how difficult would it be to remodel the Seawolf? Removing the chin-mounted sonar dome and making the Virginia model slightly shorter and about 30% wider would work nicely.

That wouldn't be a problem, but I can't do that at the moment, because I'm to busy with redoing the texture map co-ordinates of some other models i.e. F-14 & F-15.

No problem, it just sounded like a relatively easy plan. Of course, I know zilch about computer modeling ... the only graphics fiddling I've been doing is swapping stuff in the database around. The latest effort was seeing if the BO105 and Lynx models were better fits for the AH-6/MD500 variants and the OH-58, respectively, than the current UH-1 model.

Yep its a easy thing to do, but you need to redo some of the texture map co-ordinates as well.

Sounds like you have been having a lot fun doing that, I thought you was going to have a try at some graphic modelling?
