Hi Guys
I've just finished playing a scenario from the old DOS game: Great Naval Battles North Atlantic.
The action was Hood & Prince of Wales v Bismarck & Prinz Eugen
What was remarkable about this particular attempt, was the similarity between what actually played out, and the true historical outcome.
(Or at least what could, theoretically have happened, if the Prince of Wales' main armament had of functioned normally, and given Hood's correct target identification).
Both are approaching the K.M. ships from the S.E. (steering WSW) with the Germans steering SSW veering gradually to South.
Unfortunately, in GNBNA the PoW's actions are locked on 'Auto', so she's merrily 'banging away' at the nearest target (P.E.). Meanwhile, having been able to set Hood's guns to 'Manual', I'm able to target Bismarck.
I could tell during the course of the action, that Hood was receiving quite a lot of damage, and was probably (as in real life) the target of both K.M. vessels.
Action having been already 'joined', I had no alternative but to carry on regardless !
Suddenly: ' HOOD SUNK '
Although when I checked the damage report (after the battle), it seemed more likely that this was from flooding, due to damage sustained, starboard side aft, rather than the infamous 'magazine explosion' !
Fortunately, shortly afterwards the PoW was able to finish off the (by now) critically damaged P.E. and turn her attention to Bismarck.
These two now went at it 'hammer and tongs', the Prince of Wales putting up a very creditable performance, until finally running out of main ammunition, and being forced to retire under the cover of smoke.
A still ignominious defeat for the R.N. I'm afraid, :o but at least Bismarck would be doing no 'commerce raiding', in the condition she was in, and would have been relatively easy for a couple of cruisers to finish off.
Cheers for now
