Much like with the Midway thread, let's hear it for those that stormed the beaches in France 63 years ago!
Perhaps a good thing Rommel was away for his wife's birthday, but I don't really think his being around would have made much difference. I do often wonder though, if the deception campaign causing Hitler and others to think that the invasion was coming to Calais hadn't worked as well if the Normandy invasion would have failed.

Erm, it was 64 years ago...

Not that we shouldn't spare a thought for the people who fought that day, of course.

Good catch. We were discussing that topic during a break at work yesterday and my co-workers were surprised how quickly I knew the correct anniversary. I told them I hang out with a bunch of like minded military history scholars.

Rommel being present might have caused Hitler to release the panzers earlier, but then if he still felt that Normandy was a diversion maybe not. As far as the deception plan goes, if it failed, I think the Allies with their intel sources would have already known it and either postponed the invasion or else considered another route.

Inclusive or exclusive? If you're gonna be picky then it's neither as you have the months, days, hours and seconds to consider too. Dang picky a$$ people, ya can't get away with anything here! :rolleyes:;)
