I was recently in Fredericksburg, Texas, birthplace of Admiral Chester Nimitz, and home to the National Museum of the Pacific War. They had on display a Japanese midget sub, mast and torpedo tubes from the USS Foote, a Stuart tank, as well as numerous artifacts and ship models. They can be seen a the link below:

I'm currently in Louisiana on my way home, and today I got to see the USS Kidd, a WW2 destroyer. Pictures will be available when I upload them. Lessee- on this trip I've seen a battleship (Texas), a carrier (Lexington), a destroyer and a midget sub- not bad for a naval history buff! I also spotted the BB Alabama on my way to Texas, but won't have a chance to visit this time- that'll be for another trip.
P.S. for Ed- I never did try any Texas chili, but had some great Weiner Schnitzel (which I hadn't had since I was a kid) at a German restaurant in Fredericksburg.

Robert:
My cousin's husband served on the Kidd post Korean War. He said they have an interactive website that lets you take a virtual tour of the ship.
Ahh Weiner Schnitzel, just like veal cutlet for us Italians. Must have been tasty.
P.S. Excellent photos, I think the Australian sub-gun was an Owens and the unidentified artillery piece looks like a US M1 105mm gun howitzer.

Yes, I think it was an Owens.
The weiner schnitzel was good, accompanied by red cabbage and hot German potato salad, and washed down with a local beer. Speaking of which, I also went to the nearby Fredericksburg brewing company and downed a pint of Admiral's Amber Ale (named in honor of Nimitz of course. They also had 64 oz bottles you could have filled, so I got one of the Admiral's Amber to take home. When my folks come for pizza tomorrow I'll open it.

I was also in San Antonio to visit the Alamo. There I had a rather unusual incident. We had to park a few blocks from the Alamo, and while we were standing at a street corner waiting for the "walk" light and i heard a woman shouting. I didn't pay any attention at first until I heard her say "you with the camera" (I have a Canon EOS 10D with a 18-200 zoom lens). I looked behind me to see who was hollering and i saw a woman standing in the window of the 3rd or 4th floor of some apartment building or hotel (or bordello for all I know) wearing nothing but a bra and panties, wanting me to take her picture. I turned my back and walked off as soon as the light changed. That's why I don't like big cities- too many crazies.
Speaking of which, I also spent an afternoon in New Orleans down in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street. That is definitely one place I would not want to be when the sun went down. And it wouldn't break my heart if I never went back.
I also spent an hour and a half in Mexico (and half of that time was simply waiting to get back into the US. As soon as we crossed the border, we saw the macho muchachos sitting in an armored car manning a machine gun, and a couple other standing around with assault rifles. The town was Nuevo Laredo- very poor, and after that little bit of time there, I can understand why so many Mexicans want to come here. That's another place I have no desire to visit again. (OTOH, I would definitely want to go back to Fredericksburg again).
All in all, it was a helluva trip. I bought a half-dozen mugs, about as many souvenir magnets, about 9 t-shirts and several books. At the Pacific War Museum, I bought Black Shoe Carrier Admiral by John Lunstrom (I've heard that's a good book) and Japanese Destroyer Captain by Tameichi Hara. I also purchased Flying Tiger (Claire Chennault bio), a small paperback about the Battleship Texas, USS Frustrate (about a Mahan class DD in WW2), two small paperbacks about the Alamo (one by Walter Lord) and the autobiography of Davy Crockett.
