Air Combat in the Battle of Britain
Great subject. I am hoping that someone might like to discuss air combat tactics in the Battle of Britain. I don't mean air strategy and such, but just 1v1, 2v2, 4v4, 1v2 and the like. Anyone up for the challenge?

Hey ;-)
I don't know if You know, but there is a very interesting book by Arkady Fiedler titled Squadron 303. It is reportage about this unit's participation during the Battle of Britain. It is written in lively language, for casual reader, but there are some very interesting descriptions of actions and tactics during the BoB.

Thank you, very much. I love to read material about individual squadrons, they were in the front lines and you get the flavor of battle.

That reminds me, the scene with the Polish fighter pilots is my favorite part of the movie 'Battle of Britain':

It's a good scene, however I have never been able to confirm that it occurred. I know it isn't recorded in the book from which the movie was taken "Narrow Margin" by Derek Wood. It also goes against good flying discipline. You don't break formation to go swanning about after jerry aircraft. The Poles were good disciplined fighter pilots, as were almost all the pilots that flew for the RAF.

Bronisław Komorowski, current President of Poland, said a few years back:
There is a saying that the Polish airman he is such that as if it is needed, will fly even on the door of the barn. So please you, I wanted to say with great satisfaction that this is not in danger. Polish pilots will fly the F-16s.

I will review these when I can. My mother passed away this evening and I am trying to get a handle on shutting down her house and taking care of business. I am an only child, so there is no one to shift the workload onto.
Thanks for your understanding

One thing the movie does get right- the "chatter" on the radio. I recall reading Robert Tuck's "Fly For Your Life" when I was a kid, and I remember that R/T discipline was a problem.

As disciplined as pilots are, they do become chatty on the R/T. It happened in the Pacific also. It's the adrenaline and excitement. In the Pacific, it caused problems because the channel for air to air communication was also the channel for the fighter controllers. Hard to direct fighters, if they are jamming up the R/T with chit chat. Strict R/T discipline and procedures must be followed or you get chaos.
