The old and the new - reminds me of a quote from James Cobb's Sea Strike where a pilot remarks that when they finally take down the Big E's pennant, he'll have to find a bar so he can get drunk enough to cry.

I think this is two pics 'photoshopped' together. The camera angle is not consistent between the two carriers (although it is close) and the lighting on the water for the two halves of the pictures seems to be different as well. Just my 2c worth.

Thank you, It bothers me when I do something stupid like that, and can't change it.

Hmmm. You are probably much better at photography than I am, but good catch. However, it is an official US Navy photo, released by the Navy. However, knowing the US Navy like I do, I would not put it past them.

The wakes are odd, too. They´re asymmetrical, which I guess can happen with wind and currents and stuff... but wouldn´t they both be asymmetrical in the same direction?

If I were a guessing man, I'd say this was an actual photo of a direct turnover on deployment. It wasn't uncommon for us (the carriers) to pass close aboard for a photo op, especially if we were required to maintain a "1.0" presence. No need to photoshop such a photo.

Agreed. The shadows of the ships are out of sync compared to the lighting, the angle of the shots are from different heights and distances, the wakes and water textures are also modified. Definitely not a professional photo modification. One of the tell tale signs of a "chop shop" pic is if it doesn't seem to focus right with your eyes and you have good depth perception vision. An original image should flow right with your eyes and not cause your brain to try and figure it out.

Two more articles about the rare event, one with a map. It occurred in the Red Sea.

I believe that the photo is real but the ships were passing each other with over a mile between them, I suspect the intervening water had to be edited out to get the two ships in a photo for publication. The helicopter taking the photo was fairly low, this could cause the problem.
