Like a lot of people have posted on this forum, my Fighting Steel will play fine for a few minutes, then when some autocamera event happens or I switch to the 3D screen, it will start stuttering and the mouse cursor will start leaving a trail and any ship identifiers start to respawn like crazy and FS becomes unplayable. I believe it is because of my Nvidia GPU which is unfortunately the one on my mainboard, thus I can't swap it out. I have tried to put in another video card, but because of a damaged memory slot, that solution doesn't work for me. So...
I'm running XP Home 32 bit on an AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core chip on a Biostar GF8200C M2+ board. I have 2 GB of memory. The GPU is a Nvidia 8200 with 512mb of video ram.
1. I first completely deleted FS, even got rid of the directory in my Program Files folder. I got rid of the Indeo it installs, too. Control Panel's "add or remove programs" is your friend.
2. I next cleaned my registry with a registry cleaner. I then went through my registry manually with Regedit and deleted any references to Fighting Steel. I then re-ran my registry cleaner to clean up any errors I might have caused.
3. I then deleted my Nvdia video install, which means my computer defaults to the Windows default drivers. Crappy video!
4. I went to Nvidia for the oldest Nvidia drivers for my video I could find:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_174.74_whql.html
5. I then reinstalled Nvidia using the above driver installer.
6. Reinstalled FS, redid Indeo, installed the scenario editor, etc.
7. Ran Fighting Steel.exe under Windows 95 mode using the properties tab, made sure all the boxes were checked.
FS seems to play okay, none of the problems I used to have.
8. I added the FS 1.1 patch
Still runs okay.
9. I added fsp_v10.43_e. I added the FS 1.1 patch just in case the FSP patch was causing the problem.
Still runs okay.
I played the entire Bismark vs Destroyers scenario and it did this without a stutter.
Your mileage may vary. Your computer may not work using the same changes as what did on mine. Messing with the registry can trash your computer. If your computer crashes, it's not my fault!
As an interesting side note. I also fly Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Under the new driver (which is actually the oldest driver I could find, even older than the one on my original mainboards drivers disk), I actually have better FPS under the same settings than the newest hottest Nvidia driver dated June 2010... Read into that what you will, but I think this was my last Nvidia related hardware purchase.
