Smiffy:

It certainly had its moments. Too bad it ended up with life imitating art when Leo's character suffered a real heart attack and died.

Jon:DHow about M*A*S*H, I personaly don't like most of the sit-com's that are out today to me they are an insult to my intellegence but some of the siticom's I grew-up with are pretty good like Alice, One Day at a Time, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, and Lavern and Shirley. Though I will addmit there are a few good ones like Married with Childern and Cheers are good.

It can easily be said that we get too much American TV, especially kids programs, but when the Americans get it right they make excellent TV shows that are often very innovative. For example The West Wing's walking and talking shots.

No one does better historical documentaries than Ken Burns, although some of the History Channel's output is excellent, like The American Revolution. I just wish they wouldn't waste money dubbing their stuff into English accented English for showing over here, they should use the money to make more good programs.

HBO turns out good stuff too, and sometimes in cooperation with the BBC.

My all time comedy favourite has to be Married with Children, although Family Guy comes a close second.

I heard Loretta Swit (Hotlips) talking on a BBC radio show about M.A.S.H.. She said that one of her prize possessions is a full set of video recordings of M.A.S.H. as aired on BBC2, without the laughter track.

Ed, I can safely say I have only ever watched 2 episods of Seinfeld during its intire run and I royaly hated it. As to Law & Order those are dramas not sit-com's which you will notice is what I listed. But I do like the Law & Orders. I also like other dramas like CSI, CSI NY, CSI Miami, JAG, NCIS, the short lived Over There, The Shield, The Closer, With out a Trace, and Numb3rs

Sorry John:

I apologize for missing that qualifier, especially in light of an earlier post about the West Wing. You don't like Seinfeld? You need serious help and medication!:D

In order for me to watch it I would need a pre frontal lombotomie done with a shotgun, that show was an insult IMO to anyone with an IQ higher than room tempature. To me The Simpsons and South Park are more intellegent.

Don't forget All in the Family. I also liked Home Improvement, but I agree most current sitcoms stink.

Yes, a good show. The Jeffersons were a spinoff of All in the Family, as was Maude (with Bea Arthur, another good show). Maude in turn spun off Good Times, which was a good show until they killed off John Amos' character. Then the show went quickly downhill from there.

Who wants to watch an intelligent sitcom? Seinfeld is funny as hell.

I watched an episode or two of Seinfeld and wasn't that crazy about it either. As a matter of fact, the only thing I liked about it was the standup bit Jerry did at the beginning of each show.

Speaking of Seinfeld, I do recall a hilarious commercial he did (I think it was for American Express). He was in England doing a stand-up routine and made a comment about a seventh-inning stretch, which of course no one in the audience got. So (using the credit card) he travels the length and breadth of England (playing cricket, ordering bangers and mash, etc.), picking up the lingo. At his next stand-up routine (wearing English-style clothes) he makes some comment about tea time, which makes the audience roar with laughter. Seinfeld says under his breath, "I have no idea what I just said."

I went to a baseball game once, in Denver. I didn't understand what was going on, but I soon found the bar. Quite a few beers later we got to the seventh-inning stretch, I thought that they had all gone mad:eek:. Either that or American beer was better than I thought.
