Hi All,

Is there a generic MANPAD in the game already? I was looking for the SA-7,SA-16 or SA-18 but I can't see them listed. They are in the weapons spreadsheet but I guess they are listed as being part of a ship loadout.

Regards,
Mark

They might be in one of the land based infantry options in the editor. I have no idea which one though and I suspect they are very short range in terms of the game. Might be of some use against low flying helicopters but jets probably will not need to get that close most of the time.

3 mile range is deadly enough for most of the worlds airforces, I'll not be making up any scenarios with a US CVBG in the near future.

O.K.

There are MANPADS in the game as an arnament of Infantry 1, Infantry 2 and Infantry 3 units. They use, respectively: FIM-92 Stinger, Sa-14, and Blowpipe
missiles. Also some SAM batteries like Sa-20 have additonal launcher for MANPADS, Sa-18 in case of Sa-20.

Thanks, that should do just as well.

True, but only if my pilot flies within range. On the other hand he could stand off from whatever target he wants to hit unless he just has bombs of course in which case you should have gor someone else to do the mission :-)

Of course, I usually prefer US and similar types where the above is not much of a problem most of the time :-)

MANPADS and good old ground-flung lead are reasons why I generally eschew low-level attacks - I often like to scatter infantry around for realism and it's disconcerting when aircraft skimming under the radar of the high-end S-300s get potted by some grunt with a shoulder-fired weapon. Especially since unlike the big boys you don't find those suckers unless you're almost on top of them. Likewise, infantry SAMs are pretty much the leading cause of death when I send attack whirlybirds in to finish a job.

There are times when you have to change your tactics to low level air attack because of the nature of the enemy air defence system as was the case with the RAF during Operation Desert Storm. And on the helicopters there was that embarassing incident with the Apaches when they tried that deep raid during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
