I was playing a custom scenario, Japan vs. France (I'm playing Japan)

I had a Fuso class BB disengage for no apparent reason. It was the first real hit the ship had even received and it immediately turned tail and fled. I had unlimited ammo turned on so it wasn't an ammo issue: Here's the AAR information:

On turn 20, the ship was only slightly damaged:

(A1) BB HIROSHIMA SPEED: 16 COURSE: 315
H:57-98% S:23-100% F:55-98%
BR:100% CR:100% PR:100% ST:100% FC:100% SL:100% RD:100%
MB: 14" 6/0/0 FP: 15
SB: 6" 14/0/0 FP: 4
TB: 5" 4/0/0 FP: 3
AMMO: MB-20 SB-12 TB-10
MB TARGET: (A1) BB NORMANDIE
SB TARGET: (A1) BB NORMANDIE
TB TARGET: (A1) BB NORMANDIE

Also on turn 20, the ship took this hit:

(A1) BB NORMANDIE FIRING MAIN BATTERY: 15" FULL ROF AP
TARGET: (A1) BB HIROSHIMA
FIRE CONTROL RADAR: F1
TARGET SHIP RANGED
SHIP FLOODING: 1
RNG: 16000 BRG: 68 ASP: 68 HIT/STRD-PK: 31/41 B/D-PK: 94/6
BELT AP-PEN: 9 PEN PK-H/T/S: 100/100/100
ARMOR: B/D-TF/TT-S: 5/5-5/5-1
*** PENETRATING BELT HIT ***
DAMAGE: H-11 F-7
GUNS DAMAGED: MB-2 SB-2

On turn 21, the ship disengaged, still with only slight damage and only a flood rating of 1:

BB HIROSHIMA SPEED: 15 COURSE: 180
SHIP FLOODING: 1
H:46-79% S:23-100% F:48-86%
BR:100% CR:95% PR:100% ST:0% FC:100% SL:100% RD:100%
MB: 14" 4/1/1 FP: 10
SB: 6" 12/0/2 FP: 3
TB: 5" 4/0/0 FP: 3
AMMO: MB-20 SB-12 TB-10
MB TARGET: (A1) BB NORMANDIE
SB TARGET: (A1) BB NORMANDIE

DISENGAGING

As you can see, the damage is not massive, there are still functioning turrets, ammo wasn't an issue, and it was still very much in the fight. So I cannot fathom why the Hiroshima would've disengaged.

ST:0% = Steering destroyed.. automatic disengagement as there is no possible way to maintain formation, the ship cannot maintain effective fire vs a specific threat, and makes the ship far easier to hit by enemy ordnance.

You could consider the demise of the Bismarck as a classic example of a ship unable to fight effectively after her steering gear was destroyed by the aerial torpedo hit to the stern - and she was not even trying to stay within a formation of ships.

Note, destroyed steering can also cause a ship, at times, to be disabled in WCNAW.

Thanks.

Oops, I completely missed the destroyed steering.

Thanks.
