My birthday is coming up this weekend so I decided to spoil myself (any other time of the year and I would consider these to be to expensive....) and ordered Naval Firepower: Battleship Guns and Gunner in the Dreadnought Era, and U.S. Battleships: An Illustrated Design History both by Norman Friedman. Eventually I hope to get all of his books.

Good choices, I got both of them last year along with the book on US carriers.

Mike:

You will enjoy them, although the Firepower book can be a bit dense at times.

Happy Birthday, Mike!

Mines coming up this weekend as well, but I'm trying to ignore it. Maybe then it will go away.

Sound like good books. Enjoy them!

Hey Kurt,
Try telling people your age on one foot, throws them off everytime. I'am only 31.5 on one foot, doesn't sound so bad.:p

I could use leap year as well I suppose. But there was no Feb. 29 in 1955! :( If I could use leap year I'd only be 13.75!!!!:D

I enjoy the Firepower book, it's just like reading one of my old tech manuals. Brings back fond memories and dreams. They almost always put me to sleep when I brought one home. Yea, I know, I nuts. I used to bring them home to read. :p

I used to do the same thing with old IBM technical manuals. They were an absolutely perfect cure for insomnia!

After reading discussions on this forum and reviews by forum participants, I bought "Combined Fleet Decoded" this past weekend from Half Price Books (for less than half cover price for the hardcover). Delving into it evenings now....

Gary:

Excellent book and it gives you a different side to the war in the Pacific. What I still find amazing is that neither Germany nor Japan ever really considered that their codes were compromised.

Name the only code from WWII that to this day has never been broken.

The Navajo code, it was not a written language and they had to use words form their lexicon to indicate a particular weapon. I think the word for turtle was used to indicate a tank.
