In the rules it states that a ship cannot fire at another ship if the LOS touches a land hex. What about land units? We are playing a bombardment scenario, and one of the land targets are not "on the beach", but instead is 2 land hexes deep (ie it is hex I03 on tactical map 3, with a row of land hexes in row J, with the water starting in row K). My question is, how far can a ship fire at land hexes? I would assume that a ship could hit the land unit from row K. What about if a ship is in hex F05? There are 3 intervening land hexes between that hex and the land target in I03.

Hello,

LOS (line-of-sight) is not really applicable to naval vessels firing at land targets in the game, as all land targets you are tasked with engaging are considered to either be 'registered' targets and/or fixed targets for which the location data is sufficient for indirect engagement. I note that Page 13 of the NW-WW1 Rules Manual does state that (at the start of the scenario) you roll (and record) the maximum distance at which each Land Unit may be engaged by naval units; this variable distance limitation represents several abstractions, such as a target possibly being on a reverse slope, how well hidden/camouflaged the target is, and other factors, all of which can limit effective fire at a land target.

So, for your specific question the answer depends upon what type of land unit is occupying the hex in question -- if it were, for example, an Airstrip then it could be fired at by naval units from 2 to 12 hexes away (determined by a 2d6 roll made at the start of the scenario).

Yep, would help if I read that chart completely
Thanks!
