It was an interception mission as the Germans (moi) proudly sent out 2 Magdeburg CLs, 8 DDs, and BCs Moltke and Derfflinger to reclaim the Baltic in the name of the Kaiser. The Germans were heading NE when they spotted several Russian divisions approaching them.
Soon the Germans identified the lead division as BB Gangut and CL Novik, followed by another division of B Pavel and 2 Rurik ACs. These were escorted by 6 DDs. The Russians were passing about 12 miles to the north of the Germans in a SW direction.
As the sides continued to slide by each other, the BC division came even with the tail end of the Pavel division. At that time, the Germans had the rear CL division of a Magdeburg and 3 G192 DDs turn due north and head for Gangut while the BCs engaged Pavel and Ruriks at long range. The Germans were condident their BCs could handle the Czar tugboats at this long range while the DDs tied up the Gangut and DDs.
Things worked well at first as the DDs got close enough to fire 9 torpedos at Gangut. One managed to hit the big BB, and caused 2 DL to it. Oh yea, Gangut effectively removed from fight and this German admiral must be a GENIUS!!! Then the BCs managed to completely miss the Pavel and a Rurik.
The Ruskys didnt seem too happy about their smoldering BB. The 4 small German ships were set upon and surrounded by the CL and 6 DDs while the German BCs and Russian BB and 2 ACs continued to fire. The result was a German DD sunk with another burning brightly. Meanwhile, Pavel recieved a DL, but Moltke was also 1 DL damaged. The "genius" wasn't so cocky now, as his precious BCs were losing ground to the Rusky pre dreadnought.
The next turn, the hapless CL division with one CL and a good and a burning DD were looking for the exits. Unfortunately, there were none as the Pavel and Ruriks were closing in on them from the NE, and they had no where to go. The second German CL and DD division tried to close on Pavel as the embattled division headed NE to try to escape. The result was the last 2 G192s going down in a heap, and the Magdeburg in the other CL division that was trying to help also was burning brightly. Of course, the BCs made pretty splashes as they missed Pavel yet again.
After this, the BCs ran as fast as they could. Both sides seemed to have enough as the Russians were content to finish off the Magdeburg CL. The end tally sheets showed a lightly damaged Pavel and moderately damaged Gangut for the Russians, while the Germans had a lightly damaged Moltke with a CL and 3 DDs sunk.
The gunnery officers on board Moltke and Derffliner were transferred to the 17th army division somewhere near a place called Verdun...
Oh well, the next battleset has a Russian bombardment, a Russian amphib landing, and a German convoy around Gotland. And very few ships...
