Frontlines : Fuel of War - Mini-review,

Combat:

The weapons in FFOW have a good amount of variety and fit well with the frame of mind of your typical infantry/armored weaponry with a few new twists. You have your typical light machine guns, assault rifles, hand grenades, detonator explosives, grenade launchers, missile launchers.. but you also get some interesting drone weapons including flying and tracked mini-scouts packed with explosives, mini-guns, or rockets. Static defensive positions are also included such as EM guns, LMG mounts, etc.. The vehicles include attack helos, transports, APCs, tanks, SPAAGs, SPGs, and high mobility vehicles. The combat is fast and furious with automatic wound recovery, so long as you duck and cover before being hit repeatedly you will slowly recover - do not think you cannot die quickly however. The weapons can be quite lethal depending on engagement ranges and where your hit - example a good head shot will end your reign on the battlefield pretty quick. Vehicles also have weak spots if hit by anti-vehicle missiles to the rear and they if given a few seconds. Ammo boxes and extra weapon are scattered about in the campaign and the MP maps. Overall, the combat is a blast and the keyboard/mouse interface is easy to jump into.

Single player vs Multi-player:

FFOW is definitely intended for the MP crowd as the SP re-playability is limited to a single campaign that includes multiple objectives per "chapter". You can choose different tactics, approaches, weapons (when redeployed), and difficulty levels however to try and extend the re-playability for the SP mode. There are 8 chapters of about 3-5+ objectives each. The MP mode is the definite strong point however with a good diversity of maps covering deserts, swamps, cities, villages, oil refineries, etc.. The most impressive part of the game is the design of the maps with excellent graphics and well laid out terrain.. example, the city maps with all of their rubble, collapsed buildings, hiding places, various structures, etc.. would have been excellent in a Terminator genre type FPS. Lots of places to hide, overwatch, give cover fire, etc.. each map gives many options for tactical variety.

Overall I rate this game as "very good". Solid game play with excellent stability both in MP and SP modes, good variety of weapons and terrain, and just overall fun to play. I'm not an avid MP gamer but I have had some fun playing online with this game. If you are into MP FPS combat games this game is a very valid choice to consider. My only real ping on it is lack of extended SP re-playability (co-op mode with bots would have been a plus as has been done with the BF series) and lack of any "medical" type of support, but the automatic wound recovery is the way that aspect of the design is handled so in that case it would be a matter of player opinion. The storyline also makes logical sense for a near future type of WW3 concept.
