Did anyone else watch the Russian navy special on the Military channel last night? I've not been much of a scholor of the Russians, was largely unaware of their battles with the Ottoman Empire in the 1800's though I did know about the battles with the Anglo-French. They had some nice shots of Soviet and Russian ships toward the end of the program and some nice graphics of Shipwrecks being fired from an Oscar II.
The Red decks of the Russian ships still make me chuckle though - we always suggested that the paint color was designed to hide all the rust...

Kyle:

Darn, another good show that I missed. Maybe they will repeat it?

One thing I have noticed about most of the Discovery, History, Military channels and what not - is that they eventually repeat everything, usually several times. I didn't get a chance to catch 360 Friday (up in Washington and only really basic cable is at the Hotel) but I know that the History channel will repeat it.
Dogfights covered the Flying Tigers - interestingly started on December 20th 1941.

Battle of Sinope, Nov. 30, 1853. The Russians used explosive shells to annihilate a Turkish force. Some consider this battle the death knell of the wooden ship. Frank

Campy:

Correct. Note that the French and British deployed floating ironclad batteries shortly after during the Crimean War at Sevastopol. Oh and the guns used by the Russians were French in design. Paixhan's shell guns to be exact.
