So I had the privlage of watching Top Gun today. I know yipe kiyae right (or however that is spelled)

So anyway, I wanted to see what you guys thought about that movie.

The first question that comes to mind, is in the end they are given orders to leave Marimac and report to their post in the Indian Ocean. 24 hours later they are onboard a Carrier in the Indian Ocean.

Now, they tell us what the situation is. A communication ship has lost engine power, and has drifted into enemy territory???????????????????????

Since when is Ocean considered Enemy Territory? Now I know that nations have coastal waters, I think it is 50 miles from the shore, but that is just a guess. How is it that a fight would be insued from a Communications ship driffting into these waters?

It seems to me that even if this was a seriouse situation, it would be one that would not wait 24 hours to happen. The Navy would get a ship in position, and tow it out of harms way. My ship practiced towing another ship, so I know it can be done with any ship.

Even if a fight enssued over this, why would the Navy need Pilots from Miramac to deal with it? I mean the Pilots onboard the Carrier are fully capable of dealing with this right?

Next. In the final fight that takes place, the Tom Cats only have sidewinders loaded.

That seems kind of stupid, since the Adimral of the Carrier is more concerned about the Exocets that the Migs (Tiger II's) are carrying, and their ability to fire an Exocet at over 100 NM.

I am pretty sure that a Harpoon can only make it 70 miles, and the last time I checked an Exocet had about half the range of a Harpoon, at 40 to 50 Miles, so now lets just double that for the movie.

Back to my original point. Wouldn't the Tomcats have had phonenix and Sparrows so that if the Migs approached to within a distance to be a threat, they could take them out with long range misiles?

Finally a trivia question for ya all.

"Top Gun" had some good aerial footage and reasonable acting.. but the combat sequences were a joke. It was a typical Hollywood bloated fiction movie based on minimal fact intended to impress the movie goers - it was the greatest recruiting tool at the time for the USN however.

The captain of the Enterprise turned the ship and messed up the light, he was asked to return to the same course, the captain said it would cost $25,000. So the production people wrote him a check. I don't know if that happened, but the pilots I talked to, said it did.

The flying scenes were at Fallon. I was stationed there, I recognized some of the shots.

Actually that is not what I was looking for, but that is pretty good too. I will give a few other people a chance to answer it, then I will reveal what I am refering too.

From what I heard from guys who were aboard during filming, Cruise was a stuck up pirma donna, while the other actors were constantly on the messdecks signing autographs and BSing with crew when not filming. Cruise on the other hand flat out refused to leave officers country and actully wanted to charge for autograghs. He had to be forced by his publisist to sign autograghs and he only did it for a short time.

That is a good one too, but still not what I am looking for.

So here we go. During the filming of the movie, Mr. Cruise had a bad habit of constantly getting on the Jets, and walking around on the wings, and other parts of the fuselage. He considered it to be fun, and the Navy really did not care.

Unfortunately, Mr. Cruise also had a bad habit of falling while on the Jets, and so the Navy told him that if he climbed onto another jet, they would sue him and stop all filming.

They did that, because they where afraid that he was falling on purpose, so he could get injured, and then sue the Navy.

That is what I heard (I think from an Officer when I was in the Navy) but I cannot remember for sure.

He felt that little bit taller when walking all over the jets... wasn't used to the height made him dizzy :p

DJ:

From what I've read, Cruise and company went to one of the weekend happy hours depicted in the movie's early scenes. They were a bit miffed to see that the pretty young ladies there knew the difference between an actor and a real pilot and they wanted pilots.
